Food item selection for BOB-Calories per ounce

At least a couple times per year I dump out my family's Bug Out Bags to re-assess, change out items, etc. Yesterday I did so because I was changing bags. (Bought a Deuter Air Contact 90+10 for $10 from a neighbor). As I was doing this it struck me that I may have been thinking about the food I had selected for our bags incorrectly.

The bulk of the food I had selected because it had a proven long term storage interval and was tasty-Mountain House Packs. The only problem I foresaw at the time was that the ingredients can get crushed and the prepared food might be mushy.

The major issues with this approach is not calculating the weight of the water each one of these pouches needs to rehydrate and the space they take up in the bags.

I did up a small spreadsheet to calculate calories per ounce of various foods, including the weight of the packaging and any water needed to "make" the food.

Below are my findings, the number is calories per ounce (higher is better)

Mayday 2400 calorie food brick-120
USGI MRE ,complete (this varies by MRE menu)-100 average
Bega cheese can-96
A-Pack MRE, complete (again, variable)-63 average
MRE Entree only-Chili Mac-48
Vienna Sausages-small can-46
MRE Chicken, Noodles, Veggies, Sauce entree only-31
Mountain House Lasagna Pouch-28
Mountain House Beef Stew Pouch-24
Canned Tuna-11

Anyone else done this, what are your findings for calories per ounce of various items?

Let's block ads! (Why?)
