Troubleshooting a central A/C compressor?

Just like most of the country, today was brutally hot and humid in SE MI. The A/C was running fine early in the day, then later in the afternoon it was not blowing cold air. So I'm hoping to troubleshoot this before I call the HVAC people.

I never hear the compressor come on, but the fan runs. Inside my unit, I have a single run-start capacitor. When I look at videos and instructions for replacing an A/C capacitor, it seems that if a single unit (both compressor and fan wire to it) fails, both the fan and compressor stop. Since my fan runs but no compressor, can the capacitor still be bad or do I have another issue?
