72-Hour Family Emergency Kit

IMO 72 hour kits are retarded but better than nothing. The actual thing is pretty bad, but I've seen worse (sorry a bit negative)
IMO the magic number for starter kits is about 2 weeks.

1. They should have atleast two weeks of water per person in the family in - such as kept in a water tank or water tanks. Ideally this would be a primary water tank and a secondary tank that is kept separate in event the water system fails.

I can tell this is from the south right out the gates. and it was written by a woman who hasn't been in those situations.

First off

Here is what people really need for a 72 hour kit

for the car kit
"clothing for the most extreme possible weather conditions of that area both hot and cold"

"things like a wool blanket/ sleeping bag etc.."

a shovel would be great to have in the car kit also

extra car mats

---

the medical kit has some good things in there but pretty much basic.

I am very surprised the health department didn't include disposable latex or nitrile gloves nor a CPR facemask/mouth cover.

They also don't include soap???

They also say battery powered radio rather than a hand cranked radio... having the hand crank capacity is good.

way dependent on battery operated stuff... hand shaking flashlights can be useful dynamo type powered devices are good even without batteries.

--

My overall thoughts are that it really isn't that good but it is way better than nothing, a lot of those things I would never consider using.

72 hour kits are a bit of a joke though anyway.

I would totally redo the thing to be

2 weeks of food and water per family members (about 14 gallons per person total)

2 weeks of food at atleast 2000 calories or minimum 30,000 calories.

a first aid kit.

a "cold weather safety kit" both for home and vehicle including the blanket/sleeping bag per person

way surprised no shovel in the car kit.

The information in the blurbs is alright.

Some of the stuff really makes no sense, like paper cups/plates etc...

Treasury: Tax Refunds Match Previous Year

Tax refunds increased by 17 percent last week and are now at the same level as last year, according to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

The left and the media have spent the past few weeks arguing that the reduction in tax refunds in the first few weeks of tax filing season meant that families are seeing a tax increase.

This is misleading and wrong. Even if an individual has a lower refund, this is not cause for a concern. A lower refund simply means that the government has been holding less of your money interest-free over the past year.

In net, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is a tax cut for the majority of Americans, including middle class families:

90 percent of wage earners have seen more money in their paychecks.

Taxpayers earning between $20,000 and $50,000 are seeing net federal tax cuts of 10 percent or higher according to the Joint Committee on Taxation.

91 percent of taxpayers with annual income between $64,000 and $108,000 are seeing a 2018 federal tax cut averaging $1,400 according to the left of center Institute for Taxation and Economic Policy.

A family of four with annual income of $73,000 is seeing a 60 percent reduction in federal taxes totaling more than $2,058.

According to the Heritage Foundation, the typical American family will be almost $45,000 better off over the next decade because of higher take-home pay and a stronger economy.

Water timer help and suggestions

Hello, I am about to install a misting/drip irrigation system in my greenhouse, and I am in need of a programmable water timer. I bought an Orbit timer last year for use in my garden, and I was not happy with it. It would sometimes not turn off the water, thus flooding my garden beds if I wasn't around to turn it off.
I am looking for any suggestions as to a DEPENDABLE timer to purchase so I can turn on the mist in my greenhouse at various times during the day without worry of flooding my plants.

Thanks in advance

Immigration & related problems

I just finished listening to a very recent TED-X talk on immigration. I was startled to learn that 49% of Yakima, Washington, was Latino but still no Latinos were in city government. Since then a very few were elected. The speaker, an India born immigrant, having taken 16 years to attain citizenship, learned on her journey that it should not matter the religion, culture, or color of one's skin, but it does. This is mostly a "white" country and many want it to stay that way. And most voters seem to want an all white federal government.

I recently read in a High Country News about the racism in Portland. Oregon, where property laws haven't changed since the 1800's, and Oregon property ownership is for "whites" only.

One of the big divisions in this country has to do with races. Or religion. If you are non-Mormon you will have a hard time getting certain types of employment in Utah or SE Idaho. And there are several states that have no Blacks in them.

And many in our country use name calling to put down who we think is an immigrant. There's "kikes" and " waps" and "degos" and "Chickenoes", and "******s" and "Japs". And many still joke about an only good Indian is a dead one. Why can't we all just be Americans? Let's forget this all white culture.

Chainsaw Engine Repair Questions... Did I ruin the cylinder?

I would use a spring loaded brake cylinder hone with stones, not one of those balls of abrasive on a wire type.

You might inquire at a local good chainsaw shop. Back in the day, 2 stroke motor bikes were often bored over and fitted with larger pistons and rings.

I knew a guy that ruined his built chevy V 8 trying to set TDC with a screw driver.

If you need to ever to hold a crank - clean rope fed in the spark plug hole with the piston at the bottom - leave a tail to pull it back out. On the up stroke the rope will compress and the crank will stop moving.

Potatoes in a round bale.

I have been feeding 4x5 ft round bales to my livestock all winter, and they waste a lot.
After they eat the bale down to a nubbin, they tend to trample the rest, and cover it with manure.

So my idea this spring, is to dig up these piles of hay with my front loader, move them to my garden, and fence out the deer/rabbits/dogs.
In particular, I'm planning to plant potatoes all around the outside of this flattened disk of hay. I might even plant fruit trees in there.

Has anyone tried this before?

Default cats brought me a new present

I'm back to my "homestead" in Fl. for a few months.I'm used to the cats bringing birds, rabbits, lizards, etc, in thru the pet door, and leaving them on the floor to find in the morning.
I get up this morning to make coffee, and find a 8 inch walking catfish on the floor.Had about 3 inches of rain the other night,so it must have came from the canal out back, crossing the yard.

Work out ideas

So I’ve been into working, in varying amounts, for the past twenty years (since early high school). I’m not a buff fit body but I am strong and physically capable. The past few years I’ve been using my basement as a workout room and have a good setup including dumbbells, kettlebell, dip station, chin bar and squat rack. What I don’t have is much fire lately. The past two years were great but the last 6 months have been a major rut.

Probably need to spice things up a little. Any suggestions for sources of ideas? Or even workout routines or plans? I know what I like to do but maybe it’s time to venture outside my box...

Deer Airgun Kill on Video with .357 Pellet

Shot distance was 60 yards, lung shot quartering away, complete pass thru except that the pellet got caught under the skin on the far side after passing thru the far shoulder blade. 81 grain JSB pellet, the airgun was a modified Evanix Rainstorm 2, pellet speed was an estimated 900fps out the muzzle.

About the same energy or a hair less energy as a .22LR. But lets see your .22LR do this...

On elk, I only use one, Nosler Partition (flat base)

Boat tails are fine and so are flat base out to 400yds

You may not always see your best accuracy out of a boat tail at 100yds (there are reasons for this), try them at 200yds if you really want to find the best/worst accuracy out of them

What powder would you stock if you could only have 1?

Just for the sake of discussion, if you could only have 1 powder to reload for handguns and 1 powder to reload your rifle cartridges which powders would you pick and why?

For me I would choose Titegroup for handgun and Varget for rifle. Simply because with those 2 powders I can reload the vast majority of my calibers.

Mountain House Just-Add-Water Meals

A year or two ago Mountain House had a promo where you could try any of their meals for free via a rebate. So I got one.

Finally got around to trying it today. It was the Mountain House Chicken Breast with Rib Meat & Mashed Potatoes.

Very easy to make. Open package, take out the packet of mashed potatoes and the oxygen absorber. I boiled 1 1/2c. water and added that in, let sit for 3 minutes. Then took the chicken out (it broke apart quite a bit) and added the mashed potatoes to the remaining water, stirred and let sit another 2 minutes.

Added a tad of salt and pepper.

This was absolutely delicious.

I immediately went to Amazon to see about ordering more - but at $8.99 a bag (or $55 for 6) I'll have to pass for now.

I was curious as to how the meat would be. I've never had freeze dried meat before. Well, if you didn't know, you'd have thought it was fresh.

Their cost prohibits me from getting many of them, but if you wanted a nice moral booster during some kind of event, these would be it. All you need is hot water.

Cohen Testimony... Yikes

It is pretty much like every testimony I've seen them do: one side screams at the witness, one side asks leading comments.

I believe everyone is waiting to see what information Cohen is going to drop that has folks worried. According to some sources, the closed door meeting had people worried on the Republican side and the Dems are rubbing their hands thinking they have something good.

It is sort of like asking the groundhog about spring, only in this case we are going to get six more months of hearings.

2/27 - Things are Escalating with Pakistan & India

Why are AR-15 armorer classes LEO/MIL only?

I currently on an AK and I havent shot an ar yet, but I kinda feel left out everybody i know has an ar. I did some math on weight and it really suprised me.

Ak 8lbs
Mag 2lbs
22lbs

Ar 6.5lbs
Mag 1lbs
13.5lbs

8.5lb difference

The AK is quite a bit heavier than the AR. That alone has me interested and I tried looking up AR armorer classes since i see alot of “rifle kits” for sale on PSA super cheap but I have no idea how to put one together. The classes I can find are usually out of state and all say LEO/MIL only. Ive never been in the military and im not a cop. I just dont understand why we can legally own an ar-15 and take training classes with it ya just cant take a class on repairing it if your just a citizen?

9th Circuit gets another Trump-picked judge

While this might not get a lot of discussion here, just a little PSA that President Trump is pushing ahead with nominations to the 9th Circuit and the Senate is confirming them.

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/nin...tion-with-dems

Quote:

9th Circuit gets another Trump-picked judge, after White House bypasses consultation with Dems

The Senate on Tuesday confirmed President Trump's nominee to be a judge on the liberal 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in a party-line vote -- and, in a historic snub, the White House ignored the input of the judge's two Democratic home-state senators in the process.

Am very glad to see the President has not forgotten the disgraceful manner in which Feinstein and Harris both behaved during the Kavanaugh inquisition. As much as I hope they had learned their lesson I doubt they have.

Further in the article:

Quote:

Among those objecting to Miller's nomination were Washington State's two Democratic senators, Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray. Aides say Miller's confirmation marks the first time the Senate has strayed from tradition and confirmed a judicial nominee over the dissent of both home-state senators.

“This is wrong. It is a dangerous road for the Senate to go down,” Murray said Tuesday on the Senate floor. “Confirming this 9th Circuit court nominee without the consent or true input of both home-state senators, and after a sham hearing, would be a dangerous first for this Senate.”

Personally, I don't care what Patty Murray has to say. She is not very smart, and, if you look at her career prior to politics, she was a community college teacher whose position had been eliminated because of low enrollment.

Democrats have set the tone. Nice to see the Republicans standing up on occasion. President Trump gets 4 more conservatives on the bench that will be a marked improvement. With 29 active judgeships there are a possible 8 retirements over the next few years. Those justices were born as early as 1934 to as late as 1949. Of those, only two were appointed by a Republican; both by Bush 43.

Not hard to see why Democrats could fear a second Trump term.

Beeswax/Mineral Oil Paste

I’ve always used either coconut oil, rendered fat, or mineral oil for my steel tools or for oiling my wooden bows. I wanted to create a thicker, more viscous paste that will adhere to my tools/bows without the run off such as with mineral oil.

I’m thinking of doing 2 parts besswax (melted) to one part coconut oil/mineral oil. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thank you

Lesson learned on 2.5 Gallon Grocery Store Water

I got a pretty big surprise this week.....
I'll start off by saying that before any filtering or water processing/harvesting of any type......I store 60 gallons of store bought water in my pantry that are a combination of 2.5 gallon, 1 Gallon, 2 litre and 1 litre bottles. The concept here is to pack as much water as I can in one area of the pantry as I can.

I rotate the the water about every 2 years'ish changing it for the exact same size and shapes.

Last week we were dong some cleaning and I noticed that one of the 2.5 gallon containers had split open and lost water. It's happened before and I thing the plastic is designed to break down over time.

Normally you'll see the containers start to collapse and I swap them.

This time around there were 9 2.5 gallon containers totally empty and in original form. So I was 20+ gallon low on the reserves.
These leak so gradually that they get nothing wet.

Lesson learned do not store this type of bottle for emergency water.

Simple 4wd Truck Idea

I really like this concept. It is basically a low power 4wd truck/tractor that is built out of junkyard parts and a low power air cooled engine.

Thoughts?

I think the same idea could be scaled up/down fairly easily to suit different needs. The engine could be changed to about anything, including electric or a hybrid system.

Breaking News: UK Political Activists, Face Book Suspensions.

I'm putting this on here, instead of the UK section, as this needs to be seen.

Face Book has today suspended the accounts of Raheem Kassam, Danny Tommo, Caolan Robertson, Gordon James, Carl Pearson, Reece Coombes, Darrell Goodliffe, Jason Smith, Damien Heads, Tommy Robinson, Jonathan Wong, John McGoogan, Richard Inman & a few dozen more. (I'm still trying to collate who else this has affected.)

All of the above are active Brexiteers, either politically involved with UKIP or run blogs or right wing news outlets.

This is nothing less than a purge against the proponents of a no deal Brexit & the fact that it has happened on the same day that the UK government has set in motion a way to circumvent Brexit means that it probably isn't a coincidence. I will go as far as saying that it's a state run manipulation of social media to shut down political opposition & something that I would never have dreamed would happen in the UK!

Needless to say, there will be a reaction against this. What it will be, I can't say? But when over a thousand years of our proud history is being betrayed by our own politicians, then it will probably be something big.

If I've got one thing to say to you Yanks, it's to fight tooth & nail for your Second Amendment rights. They wouldn't be treating us like this if most of the population was armed....

Nextel Direct Talk help needed

At one time there used to be quite a few people on this site working with the Nextel Direct Talk phones, particularly the Motorola I355.

A while back I picked up a few I355s for pretty cheap but the only issue with them is that they were Southernlinc phones instead of Nextel phones. So if you put a Nextel sim card in them and turn them on they just say "Please Enter Special Code" and won't let you do much of anything else.

Recently I bought a serial cable and was able to use the Motorola RSS to enable Direct Talk on all of the phones. The only problem though is that I still can't use Nextel sim cards with them and I only have 1 Southernlinc sim card. I would buy Southernlinc sim cards but they are virtually impossible to find since it's such a small company.

If there was some way to clone the sim cards then that would probably work since I could just copy the one sim card I do have for multiple phones. But I don't think that is possible. These phones are so old that much of the info about doing this is no longer available online.

Has anyone on here experimented with unlocking the I355 or any other Direct Talk phone? If so, how did you do it?

If you can't laugh at yourself:

Friday night I was about to soak in the tub, and heard a noise in the garage. Opened the door and a opossum hissed at me.

I yelled at it to go away, and rather than going out, it went further in.
Was going to be leaving shortly, so I didn't want it in all weekend.

I pursued it. One of my canes lives by my door, so I grabbed it and used it to pin the opossim (which then started biting the cane.)

Now NORMALLY I have a couple guns and knives on my body, but (see reference to tub) I had NO POCKETS!

There was a loaded AK about 5 steps away, but occasionally yes, there is overkill. (And I was kinda... Vulnerable.)
I beat it to death with a cinderblock. (What I could reach)

Annnnd apparently it wasn't alone.

Heard my cat moving around a few minutes ago, then was like:
Wait, the cat is outside.

Sucker was on top a shelf hissing at me.

I think it went outside (tried to reach it, left the door open and the light on)
There's a cold steel basket hilted sword on the deep freeze in case I'm wrong.

You may now laugh (or grimace) at the image of me 'with no pockets' pinning this thing with my cane and then being "now what?!"

Adopted a dog today

Got this girl today from a guy at work. It has so far killed 4 of his chickens and he said it had to go. Guy was serious too. Those chickens provide food for his family and this particular dog was not learning to leave them alone.

I liked this guys dog (this one - not the other) and joked with him more than a few times about trading him one of my Dobermans for it (the one with billy goat DNA in the mix - not the 'good' one). When she killed that last chicken he offered her up for free.

Poor girl is freaked out at the change in her world and not touching her food or water. No potty coming out of her either. Neither outside or in.

She is a smidge over one and god only knows what the heck she is. Sweet as pie, very friendly towards me, walks great on a leash (no pulling), somewhat timid (borderline fearful), formerly an 'outside dog' and not potty trained for crap...

Taking her to the Vet tomorrow to get her a checkup and all of her shots. Pray to god she does not have heartworms cause that is freakin expensive and not really in my 'dog budget' right now. Previous owner has not spent crap on this dog as far as shots, heartworm tests / preventatives, etc. Not judging him for how he cares for his animals but... I plan to take care of the stuff he didn't.

One of my Dobermans wanted to attack this dog as soon as she saw it and the other seems 'sortof' interested and much less aggressive towards it. When the interested Dobergirl went to go smell the crate that Astraia is in - She got a pretty ugly warning from the new girl in short order.

Plan to keep them separated for a good while till they all figure out what is going on here and learn the rules. New girl does not seem bothered by her crate at all (thank god the previous owner at least crate trained her and got that right). No fussing, no whining whatsoever when she is inside. Just calm dog hanging out... Dobergirls are the same way. If I tell one to get in her crate - She gets her butt in there and will do her best to stay till I tell her she can come out. Almost have them trained with the 'open door' crate thing but still have work to do to get them 100% there. (when you train them that STAY in the crate means STAY in the crate no matter if you close / latch the door or not)

Told the guy that I would give him a six pack of baby chicks to replace the ones that this dog killed as soon as I see them at TSC. Should not be long before they have those available. Will likely get a him a few bags of feed to go along with them and do whatever else I can do to help him get them growing right. (he will need better lights and a proper coop for sure - plan to help him get there)

I think I did pretty good here. 6 chicks for a dog that seems to like me and does not try to drag me around when on the leash...

DIY extended magazine

I made a shorter post on this little carbine earlier, but this one goes more in depth on the process and materials I used to turn it into a ten round gun. A little history on this rifle: It was put together from parts by Century and the chamber was cut back for .308 brass (from the French 54mm to 51mm). The barrel was surprisingly set back properly and headspacing is good to go, with no furniture wobble. The bore is perfect and it shoots very well. I cut it down to a handy 16.5" carbine, added fully adjustable sights, a flash hider, a Tourbon recoil pad and a Strike Hard gear stripper clip pouch. Then I decided it needed 10 rds instead of 5. Here is how I made that happen, with a couple links to vids of a function test and a little range action: https://youtu.be/Mc29TgDWfJQ
https://youtu.be/R82Aeyfp43Q

A Huber Concepts trigger is en route at this writing, and I'm considering an XS scout rail with a low power scope. It's a bit heavy (not horrible tho...with 20 rds on it, it's 9lbs) for a true Cooper scout, but it's still pretty sweet.

Reparations to the descendants of former slaves?

Just like the changing of the years, we've once again come to the annual discussions of reparations:

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/21/u...ce-policy.html

And as usual, liberals/progressives/socialists are making demands.

Well, you know what?

I wholeheartedly support reparations.

Let the corrupt Fed.gov add a few trillion dollars to the national debt in providing 'compensation' or whatever, pay off every black person who makes a claim.

And then?

Eliminate affirmative action and the so called 'civil rights' laws, dismantle the entire federal government bureaucracy that provides so called minority assistance programs, and eliminate all laws that pertain to nonsensical, racist 'equal opportunity' laws.

Why the change?

Because now we're even. We paid up, provided reparations, and the playing field has been reset.

We're even. You're been compensated.

Now, shut up, bitches, and quit asking for handouts and take care of your own business instead of milking taxpayers...

Another border wall?

I've been reading about the United Kingdom, the European Union and Brexit. Confusing! Trump doesn't seem to like the EU. Is it good or bad? And since Britain will be out of it in March, 2019, will it affect us? Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom and so will also be out of the EU, but The Republic of Ireland is not part of the United Kingdom (Great Britain) and will not leave the European Union. The move is called "Brexit".

The border between Republican Ireland and British Ireland has a soft border similar to parts of the U.S. Mexico border, but people on both sides don't think that will work. In the 1970's several Catholics were killed along that border by the British military. Maybe the Irish Republicans will take an idea from President Trump and build a wall. This issue is currently one of Theresa May's biggest problems.

I first learned of this issue, today, on Beau of the Fifth Column and have been researching. Would appreciate more info on this.

Retired Military and Courts Martial

Just got this link earlier today...food for thought!

https://www.military.com/daily-news/...r-service.html

I'm going with the rationale, both cases involved Marines that were still
"members of the Fleet Marine Corps Reserve", and not "truly" retired.

Would be interested to hear Leadcounsel's take on this.

Here's the text:

The U.S. Supreme Court has upheld the Defense Department's authority to prosecute retired service members for crimes they commit, even after retirement.

The court on Tuesday chose not to hear the case of a retired Marine who was court-martialed for a sexual assault he committed three months after leaving the service in August 2015. By not accepting the case, Larrabee v. the United States, the court upheld the status quo: that military retirees are subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

The denial of Larrabee's petition marks the high court's second rebuff in a year of a case involving a military retiree accused of non-military crimes in retirement.

Retired Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Steven Larrabee was convicted of sexually assaulting a bartender, the wife of an active-duty Marine, at a bar in Iwakuni, Japan, where he worked as a civilian. He had been retired -- technically, placed on the Fleet Marine Corps Reserve status list -- for three months.

Following a general court-martial in which he wore civilian clothes, Larrabee was sentenced to eight years' confinement, a reprimand and a dishonorable discharge. In a pre-trial agreement, Larrabee's prison term was reduced to 10 months.

Larrabee served his sentence but tried to have his conviction overturned on appeal, arguing that he should have been tried in a civilian court, as the offenses occurred after he was retired.

The case closely resembles that of retired Gunnery Sgt. Derek Dinger who, also while living on Okinawa and on the Fleet Marine Corps Reserve list and, later, the Active Duty Retired List, was found to be in possession of and producing child pornography. He was arrested and initially indicted within the civilian courts, but his case ended up in the military court system, where he was convicted and sentenced to nine years' confinement and a dishonorable discharge.

Dinger appealed his discharge, arguing that the case should not have fallen under the military court system and that a dishonorable discharge should be reserved for "those who separated under conditions of dishonor."

His challenge also was petitioned to the U.S. Supreme Court. It was denied last June.

Attorneys for both Marines argued that the cases should have been considered by the U.S. Supreme Court because they have far-reaching consequences for military retirees. The law stipulates that "retired members of a regular component of the armed forces who are entitled to pay" and "members of the Fleet Marine Corps Reserve" are subject to court-martial jurisdiction.

The reasoning, the government argues, is that retirement is simply a change of military status and retired personnel are subject to recall should the need arise.

But Stephen Vladeck, a University of Texas law professor who represented Larrabee, said that this argument no longer holds true with the rise of the reserve component. He called the idea that retirees are reserved for future service "anachronistic," adding that military retirees are no longer among the "pool of persons at the ready" and thus should not be subject to the UCMJ.

"Increasingly, the function has been performed by reserves, not retirees," he said.

Furthermore, Vladeck said in an interview with Military.com, there are articles in the UCMJ that could place many military retirees at risk for arrest, and the U.S. Supreme Court has an interest in weighing in on how cases involving retirees are handled.

He cited one provision in the UCMJ that makes "contemptuous words" used by a commissioned officer "against the president, the vice president, Congress" and others as punishable by court-martial.

"From Adm. Bill McRaven to Gen. Michael Hayden and Gen. Martin Dempsey, some of President Donald Trump's more visible critics of late have been retired military officers. And a provision of federal law ... makes it a crime, triable by court-martial," he wrote in a blog post on Lawfare. "But does the Constitution really allow the government to subject to military trial those who have retired from active duty -- in some cases, long ago -- even for offenses committed while they are retired?"

Yes, it does, according to the Supreme Court, in its denial of Larrabee's and Dinger's writs of certiorari.

Retired Maj. Gen. Charles Dunlap, former deputy judge advocate general of the Air Force, concurs.

In a Feb. 16 post on Duke University School of Law's Lawfire blog, Dunlap said Congress explicitly states that the UCMJ applies to retirees and that Vladeck's arguments about the impropriety of senior officers speaking out against the president, as well as the "anachronistic" idea that retirees can be recalled to active duty, aren't valid.

He added that the very act of receiving retired pay means that retired personnel are choosing to keep a relationship with the military and accept all that goes with the choice not to terminate their commission or request a discharge.

"As a retired service member subject to military jurisdiction, count me among those of my comrades-in-arms who believe it a small price to pay to maintain the connection with the armed forces," Dunlap wrote.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court's refusal to hear the Larrabee case may not be the end of the legal road for the retired Marine. According to Vladeck, Larrabee may consider suing for back pay in the Court of Federal Claims. Vladeck believes his client is entitled to do so under the Military Pay Act.

Remington 770 ** UPDATE**

A few weeks ago I posted about a 770 Remington that I had purchased. I'm sure everyone can agree that they aren't the most elegant rifle every made, but they do have some redeeming qualities.

The weather was beautiful yesterday, so I went to one of my favorite shooting places. It's an old military shooting range left over from WWII.

I was shooting an the 800 yard target. I've set up the 770 with a 6x20x50 scope, muzzle brake and bipod. The ammo I was shooting was Federal 180gr soft point. Bench shooting, I fired 20 rounds. Cold shot or hot made no difference. Most every shot found the approx. center of the 2' square target. Out of the 20 rounds, there were 2 near misses due to shooter error. Actually, the accuracy was so good, it became very boring, so I switched the 770 for a different rifle.

Problems.......
The ammo I shot was Federal 300 win mag 180gr "Power Shok". The rounds refused to cooperate and feed from the mag. Loading 1 round at a time through ejection port, they still refused to chamber or extract without a fight. The Federal ammo was extremely accurate....it just didn't cycle worth a **** in the 770.

The previous week, I used "Pvi Partizan 300 win mag 150gr". The Prvi Partizan was also extremely accurate at 800 yards, it chambered, extracted and ejected flawlessly and it's $15/box.

So it seem that my 770 is particular about it's diet. Anyone else have this problem?

How did you become Homeless?

This is meant for the actual homeless that frequent this site or even the former homeless..

I see them every day when I have to go into Portland and wonder how it came to the point where they live out of a shopping cart, sleep under a blue tarp, refuse to go to shelters for many reasons..

But, what I'd like to know is how they came to that point from being an employed, tax paying member of society and lost it all to be in the position they're in now.

I sit here in my house, have an RV outside, a pickup, two Jeeps and a bunch of motorcycles in various states of repair. I have a shop full of tools with everything from easels to draw on, yarn to crochet, mechanics tools to work on my cars.. My shop is 14'x60' and my house is 2000 sq ft.

I'm a retired 20% disabled vet which means that 20% of my retirement check isn't taxed. I have medical from the military but, I have to pay about $700 a year for what was promised as free medical for my wife and I after retirement.

My vehicles aren't new by any means. I run my own small business drawing plans for people building houses, a trade I learned in my 20 years of service..

So, what I'm asking is a short paragraph or two about how you ended up losing everything and living under a tarp.

Is it all about drug habits?? Alcohol problems??

I'm serious about this. Maybe you can tell us about what you do to survive on a daily basis as well.. Is there anything you're doing to better yourself?

Any Mauser guys here?

I picked up a bunch of ammo today and got a Russian Capture K98 (eagles are still on it) and a yugo 44 K98 thrown in on the deal.
Yugo has one of those rear sight rail replacements and a scout scope on it (reversable) but otherwise they are unmolested.

I'm not a "markings guy" I know enough about most guns to recognize "I think that's a rare one, let me look it up" and go from there (thank you smart phones) and I'm having trouble pricing them. (I am a scout rifle fan And would like to shoot the 44, but with my spine I doubt I'll manage a magazine.) I've found very little in Russian captures that's recent, and pretty much every thing on Yugo's is the 48, not the 44.

The pages I've found to Russian capture markings are mostly dead links, so I'd appreciate a lead on that also.

Thank you.

A black woman for President

The media sure is pushing the agenda for a black woman as the democrat nominee for President. Every opportunity they get they put a black woman in the spot light. Singing the anthem at the Super Bowl, parading Serena Williams out every chance they get, the loser from the Georgia governor's race after the State of the Union.

They are working hard to push that agenda. They want the woman vote, they want the black vote and the dumb vote.

Lining bottom of garden row with organic material?

You are referring to hugelculture. And I know that spelling isnt right.

It takes several years for it to really get going.

Meanwhile, focus on your rows. Chicken manure would be excellent, cover it with leaves, hay, practically anything in the organic realm. Even some of the existing garden soil. You need the microbes to break down and use the manure. Hopefully by planting time it will have cooked off enough to be usable. Adding in cow on top of that, might just be too much. Maybe put the cow in other rows. You could do side by side comparisons?

On a side note, my neighbor who is about 101 years old, does the following:

In the fall cleans out the hightunnel. Makes 3 trenches. Fills the trenches will leaves, piles the soil back in. Plants his tomatoes on Valentines Day. Why V-day? I have no idea. Thats his way of remembering it.

I have been in his hightunnel in the spring, and its jam packed with plants. He has done it this way for at least 30 years. Every year. Good harvests, and never seems to have disease issue.

Makes me rethink how I do everything.
