Red/Green dot options... stupid question

so, im looking into getting a Vortex red dot scope for my AR and got to wondering something; as most scopes now come in the red/green option, is there a tactical/scientific reason for this? Is red better for some situations & green better in others? is it mostly just that one person likes one better than the other?

and then, another thought hit me, what happens for red/green colorblind individuals with these dots? do they/you see a light, just not the color of it?
