I've only been preparing the last few months but have made pretty good headway. I've tried to store some ready made food like commecial and home canned goods, as well as the basic ingredients to cook my own food like flour, salt, sugar, dried milk etc. But what I'd like to do for the next step is to go even further and store grains that I can process in to flour or cook up in to gruel etc. The problem I've run in to is that most grains like wheat and oats need to be hulled.
So I'm wondering if it's better to buy already hulled wheat berries and oat groats and store those? Or buy bulk unhulled grains and then hull them as needed?
It seems like unhulled grains are cheaper then hulled, would be easier to find in times of trouble, and are more stable and easier to store. But so far I have not found any information on how to hull the grains at home. Every solution I've seen involves building your own dehuller or converting a grain mill to dehull.
Ideally I would like suggestions on where to find a machine that can both hull the grain as well as grind and process it. Second best would be a separate dehulling machine. Human powered or capable of being converted to human power is ideal.
Thanks,
Will
