Crisp polo, tucked in.
Slacks - maybe with some extra noticeable pockets.
Shoes that look pretty serious...like lace up boots with a hiking flavor.
...and that look on your face. Hard to disguise that "I see everything + in charge" look.
I'm a people watcher. I think maybe you need to start there. (Besides the obvious watching as a LEO) I look at habits and trends. I have pretty good hearing, so I like to focus in and listen to conversations.
Clothes...I try and never tuck because I carry IWB at 5 o'clock. When it's warm enough, I like polo's and cargo shorts with flip flops. Yeah...I know. But I prefer comfortable, and usually no one things a dude that looks like a surfer bum has a 1911, two spare mags, weapon light, oddly large tactical folder knife, yada yada yada
Behavior...this is where I think you can really cover things up. I walk pretty briskly. I try and keep my eyes up, but I will purposely look distracted often. If you can look distracted, you will blend in to most normal folks out there. In stores, if I see someone catch my gaze, I do a quick squint focus at the shelves...like I'm looking for something. I see them through my peripheral instantly move on. I love my Bolle polarized sunglasses and try and have them on as much as possible. It relieves a lot of that eye-contact risk.
I guess you could say I've had many years of training in "leave me alone" behavior.
