I work with Boy Scouts, and you nailed it.

Shorter hikes often involve rookies, they often have bad shoes, and don't yet know how to dress, how to pack, and how to act. Even with the experienced guys, here's a mind set of, it's just a little walk, we can screw around.

When the long hike is on the menu, the packs are heavier, preparations were better, and they are a bit more serious about things.
