Russia a Nuclear Threat True or False?

I don't know if this is in the right place,I apologize in advance if not.

My question is how realistic is a nuclear exchange with Russia? I have witnessed countless talk of arms reduction.And continued threats from Russia, and what I have been lead to believe,a sophisticated and large nuclear arsenal.This Has been going on ,since the close of world war two.And throughout my entire life time! Still recall third grade and doing drill the going down to the basement and leaning on the kid in front of you,and shielding your eyes.In my humble opinion its a real threat ,that has a minute chance of happening.I would gamble to say that if our missiles ever flew in there direction it would more than likely be caused by an error than a deliberate first strike
