DIY camper trailer

Dont know how helpfull this will be but since i may be doing something similar soon i will share my thoughts.

I recently made a deal with a friend to get a homemade camper/toy hauler from a friend for free. It was a flooded fullsize camper that a fabricator bought on the cheap. He then cut all but 10 foot of the camper away. Leaving a small portion on the front half and then closed it back up. On the back 3/4 of the trailer he built a rack for a dunebuggy. My friend used it for years to haul his buggy up to the coal hills and camp.

The camper is still solid enough to be useable and big enough for two people. My plan was to get an old U-haul truck box from another friend and set it on the back of the trailer after removing the buggy ramps. Using the box for storage of supplies and the camper to live in if SHTF. The U-box has a attic overhang on it also which would be perfect to put my TW200 under.

Unfortunatly after i took some measurments the box was too long to fit. And ive yet to decide if il do something else to convert it to a BO camper or just take the camper off and convert it to a long utility trailer.

Anyhow if you are mechanicly inclined and on a budget like me you could look at doing something similar. If possible find a damaged but salvageable camper on the cheap. Then cut out the bad portion. Retaining a small good portion. Then add a U haul box for storage. I like the idea of a U haul box since they are lightweight aluminum and sturdy. They do get hot though. My plan was to add ventilation for summer and a small woodstove for winter.

Also you could just buy a suitable flatbed and a cheap U haul box to mount. Then convert it into a camper. They are much sturdier then campers. Add solar, ventilation, a small woodstove and insulation. Youd be well on your way to a solid cheap BO camper. I may do this i just havent decided yet.

Just some rambling thoughts and ideas. Good luck on your project.

Chris
