One of the things that strikes me is the dichotomy between the people who think NASA is competent and those who think space flight should be private. (There are also those who think we should abandon space flight, but their position is not implicated here.)
Our supposed goals are to either go to Mars or back to the Moon, depending on who you are talking to and who the current President happens to be.
So what is NASA's plan? Neither. They are going to build a new space station in lunar orbit:
The theory is that they will using it as a jumping off point into space. Could be the moon, could be Mars, could be an asteroid.
I guess it would be too simple to just go to the Moon or to go to Mars. After spending all that money on the Space Shuttle and that dead end called the International Space Station, they are going to build yet another expensive dead end rocket to go to and build yet another expensive dead end space station.
It's absolutely ridiculous. The only good thing I have to say about it is that it will keep NASA out of the way of the private sector people who are actually going to Mars or the Moon.
Here's a critical assessment:
NASA has really outlived its usefulness to manned space flight.
NASA is a mess
