Preferred pack material

I had generally believed that cordura was the material of choice for outdoor gear (packs and bags).

I recently saw an ad (overseas) where they priced canvas at a premium. Why would that be? (rarity?)

"1000 Denier PU coated Cordura / Cotton canvas +5 pounds"

I am seeing a lot of new-generation products utilizing waxed canvas. Is this nostalgia? Purists?
