First thought I had the other day while rummaging through the junkyard. What a great place to lay low. Weather on foot or in a BOV, knowing of some junkyards along your intended route could be perfect. Drive your BOV in and hide it among the other wrecks. If on foot you will have a plethora of vans to choose from that should provide shelter and room to stretch out. Also, a little time spent checking cars can be a good way to find emergency stuff that could have been lost or damaged on your escape. I rarely visit the junkyard and don't find several long lost lighters or matches, dry paper like napkins, and all sorts of whatnot. As an added plus, junkyards are often on the outskirts of a populated area or in an area not heavily populated before shtf.
An RV or car dealership. While I'm certainly not advocating stealing or looting, an RV dealership or big rig sales place may be an ignored area where one could rest with little likelihood of running into others. If staying inside, be respectful and don't make a mess... it's not your property after all. And leaving without a trace of your visit may keep it a place to be revisited if the need arose.
Wastewater treatment plants and other government project facilities. If a big enough event happened then I doubt bob the sewer guy is going to be heading in to make sure the poop water gets processed, especially if he isn't getting paid and has his own family to care for. A big, stinky treatment plant may smell bad but you would likely find many areas you could get in out of the weather and gather yourself for the next leg.
