Underwater City - Why not?

I used to work with a guy. Every time I passed him in the hall he would say, "Underwater City".

He suggested that we need to colonize under the ocean in a big way. I never gave it much thought, but why not? Has to be a lot cheaper than colonizing a planet with no magnetic field or atmosphere and requires a mountain of fuel and years to get you and a lifetime of supplies there.

Let's say you put the city on a sea floor 200 feet deep. That's 100 psi the city hull would have to withstand. Not so costly. Put a nuclear reactor down there and be totally self sufficient. Make your own power, air and fake sunlight, harvest sea plants and fish for food. No fire ants, no termites, no grizzly bears, no shoveling snow. Climate control is almost done for you as the temperature will be fairly stable. Any heat pump will be very efficient, and you are exchaning heat with water. (Granted the heat eachangers will need to be Titanium). Sewage treatment would just be a long pipe leading away and down current from your food harvest area.

There would be no internal combustion engines. It would all be battery or fuel cell or power directly from the nuclear plant.

Resources would need to be sent down of course like motors, tools, and foods that grow on land. But eventually, people would start boring out mineshafts from the colony to extract ores, maybe start harvesting methane hydrates and sending up to the surface dwellers in trade for goods imported to the briney depths.

You would be largely protected from storms, asteroid strikes EMPs down there I would think. Global warming would be a meaningless term.

Your high rises would be the equivalent of submarines stood on end, with strong glass windows.

You would have large central areas like a public square (or dome) to serve as a public park and assembly area for entertainment, exercise, a sense of community and to conduct a marketplace .

Put an offshore drilling platform beside it (minus the drilling stuff) to mount your antennae to for communications, an elevator to the surface, and a helicopter platform.

The Chinese are ahead of us, already colonizing island reefs in the S. China Sea.
