Water purification idea

Hey, I have a thought/idea on water purification that I have never heard of before.

I have heard of seaweed being studied for use in bioextraction, to clean toxins from waterways, but I have never heard of purifying drinking water by utilizing the high iodine content of seaweed. What do you think?
I have been told by a couple of people that it can't be done, but the logic is sound, so just thought I'd throw my idea to a larger audience.
Any thoughts?
