Beartooth - First Impressions

After a long wait (15 months from pre-order to arrival) my four Beartooth's arrived on Thursday. This rollout was lengthy and I am pretty sure they did not meet any of their benchmarks, the first "we are about ready to ship" email came last November.

When I got home Thursday I had four packages on my porch, each package had two boxes of two Beartooth devices for a total of 16 devices, I ordered 4. Three friends also had 4x the number they ordered, shipped. Beartooth has since asked for these back.

On to the devices. They are plastic with a power button, bluetooth button and micro USB connection. They are about 4" x 2.5" so not too big. I opened two boxes for my four devices. They needed charging overnight so Friday afternoon I played a little with them. All needed immediate firmware updates which ended up bricking one of my four devices. Adding contacts was a tad tricky, mostly because I did not watch the video on how to do (you must swipe left to save). One bug that is apparently with iOS only right now - once you add someone, then you scan for more contacts it still wants you add the same contact you already have. I was told this bug should be fixed soon.

Two features that are not immediately available are Mesh Networking and Encryption. These should be out in a future update.

Max power is 1 Watt but can be set in the app to a lower power setting. The maps are nice with an option of Dark or Light background. The voice communication is kind of like Zello if you have used that. You push to talk and it transmits your voice, it is not full duplex like a phone. Text messaging is pretty straight forward as well.

I have not tested any range with them yet, but hope to soon. Fire away with any questions.

I should add that with the glitches and everything else, I did receive a call from the CEO today as he was traveling to walk me through some of the issues, which was nice. Honestly, I would say these are not quite ready for primetime or trusting them for emergency comms, but I think they are already better than goTenna.
