I know that inverters produce alternating current. You can't just combine sources of alternating current because they would be "out of phase". Alternating current reverse positive and negative several times every second. If the two sources aren't synchronized, combining them will not work.
Batteries provide direct current. You can combine sources of direct current. By putting two batteries in series, you add up the voltage of the two batteries.
Batteries connected in parallel provide the same voltage as one battery but at a higher amperage or current.
