DefaultThe REAL story in Puerto Rico

The Liberal lapdog media and celebrities are complaining Trump (and the US for that matter) aren't doing enough to help. As usual, untrue!

Read this while you have the chance because as soon as a big whig at HuffPost sees this is out they'll yank it. I was blown away they posted it.

Quote:

The aid is getting to Puerto Rico. The problem is distribution. The federal government has sent us a lot of help; moving those supplies, in particular, fuel, is the issue right now,” says Col. Valle. Until power can be restored, generators are critical for hospitals and shelter facilities and more. But, and it’s a big but, they can’t get the fuel to run the generators.

Quote:

“It’s a lack of drivers for the transport trucks, the 18 wheelers. Supplies we have. Trucks we have. There are ships full of supplies, backed up in the ports, waiting to have a vehicle to unload into. However, only 20% of the truck drivers show up to work. These are private citizens in Puerto Rico, paid by companies that are contracted by the government,” says Col. Valle.

Help with Pears

Okay, I just had to know more.

Quote:

Fruit that’s grown during really hot, dry summers has a tendency to turn pink once in the jars.

Quote:

It happens more often if there's a blush on the skin, but factors like the amount of nitrogen applied during the growth cycle can also play a role in color changes.

Quote:

In canned apples, pears, peaches, and quinces there can sometimes be a pink, red, blue, or purple color, this is caused from a natural chemical change which occurs in cooking the fruit. There is nothing that can prevent this that we know of.
I had heard before of this happening with canned quince, but not the other fruits.

Quote:

Pears may turn pinkish in response to several conditions. Pears contain leucoanthocyanins, colorless precursors to colorful anthocyanin pigments. Pear variety and handling techniques determine whether color changes will occur. Heating that occurs during canning or when pears or boiled in a syrup may enhance the conversion from leucoanthocyanins, to anthocyanins. The anthocyanins then combine with metallic ions to produce the pink color. There is no way to prevent this reaction, which is harmless.
There's a fuller explanation here, including other factors that affect the color and a possible remedy:
http://ift.tt/2wrqtM4
Growing pears on acid soil, excessive cooking, or delayed cooling will turn them pink
HFCS turned them pink, but sugar syrup didn't.

http://ift.tt/2wr0Mei

Quote:

Despite the identification of the pigment responsible for discoloration in canned pears as a tin–cyanidin complex, addition of stannous ions to susceptible pear purée prior to processing partly or completely inhibits the discoloration. This effect cannot be obtained with canned pear halves, but other reducing agents, such as sulphur dioxide, are effective inhibitors of the discoloration. By such treatment canned pears of acceptable quality can be produced from varieties which are normally avoided for processing because of their susceptibility to discoloration. A mechanism whereby reducing agents prevent the formation of pink pigments is described, and an explanation is given of the differences in the effect of stannous ions on pear halves and pear purées.
So I guess feed the trees some lime/bone meal, don't over-feed the nitrogen, keep them well-watered, pray for a cooler summer, can them before the skin starts to blush, water-bath can, cool the jars quickly, and hope for a better outcome next year.

Anybody watch Blue Bloods Season 8 opener?

I am a huge fan of Blue Bloods. The first episode of this season was a shocker. I won't give it away for those who haven't seen it yet.

Speaking about police:

Quote:

Frank: They know what people are capable of in ways that most, thankfully, do not. They have seen firsthand the cigarette burns on an infant's back or the black eyes and the sideways jaw on an 80-year-old rape victim. And they assume the worst. And they take that on so that good people can go about their lives and think generously about their fellow man. They provide that luxury.

Margaret (new mayor): You say that as if it's a fact.

Frank: It is to me. And a hard-earned one. And whoever is in my office, he or she, if they're any good, is gonna feel the same way.

Post Wild Land Fire at our home place report

We live in northern California and have finally gotten clean air after the wild land fire closest to us is now 70% contained and the fire lines nearest are extinguished.

The fire started in mid June when there were plenty of resources at that time to address the hazardous conditions for residences near it.

That was a huge blessing but the eminent threat of losing our home was very real, stressful, physically and mentally challenging in a number of ways.

We have had big fires in our area over the last two decades of living here and huge fires happened prior to our moving here.

The key to being prepared for facing wild land fire in our opinion means knowing your neighbors and being aware of stakeholders who are either in favor of letting wild land fires burn even if threatening homes and live stock and those who believe in prevention and fighting the fires. And doing what you can with what you have and asking for help and not being prideful.

Over the last ten years the stakeholders have organized and have to come to agreement on being a more fire safe community as well as identifying both state, national and private land owner lands which are at greatest risk for a devastating fire.

Many can argue over as to why we are facing catastrophic wild line fires. Past logging practices of large units, failure to keep understory brush cleared, diversion of surface and subsurface water to the multitude of illegal pot grows and the unwillingness or inability of humans in keeping their own properties cleared of brush are the most common topic of discussion at the local fire safe council community meetings as well as within the various governmental agencies.

After the initial fire was attacked we had a period of relative safety. Dozer work, hand crews, hot shot smoke jumpers, planes and helicopters focused on reducing the fire spread to private homes.

Then the hot summer wind, low humidity and the strategic fire operations (back burns) brought us our evacuation order.

Thankfully we had the gift of time prior to this we moved our tractor, DR, rototiller, hand tools, carpentry, plumbing, wood working, sewing, food preservation, and electrical tools off site to a secure storage location.

That took us five trips. After so many years we here we have acquired of "stuff". We also took our fishing and hunting gear and photos, vital docs, some clothing and house hold goods.

We pulled out the fire foil we saved from a big fire years ago and later the forest service put it on the lower portion of the decks and porches as well as the vents on the house, worked on clearing hazardous brush, construction materials and 8 cords of stacked fire wood to a lower flat away from the house.

When the surge of fire became a more distinct hazard we still had a lot of work to do.

Most of our neighbors planned to stay and defend their homes. The community came together and spent a week going from homestead to homestead focusing on what could be done to reduce the threat.

We are now middle aged and elderly at our place and my husband cannot physically cut down huge trees and we did not have the heavy equipment to make a fire break. The neighbors came in a cut down trees that had died last winter during our epic once in 300 years snow event.

The forest service crowned the fire an Incident 1 fire and some resources were returned to our area. Now at this point there was fire throughout the north west and resources were tight.

The local fire safe council came in and their liaison worked tirelessly advocating for land owners for help and we sure did get it at our place.

The Vail Hot Shot Crew busted their rears helping us move away from the house combustible materials, the fire wood, timber, tools and items we had not been able to move off site.

The forest service set up folding water tanks and water lines and weed wacked. The locals moved the logs down to the lower flat to be later made into lumber.

They assisted in marking a trail the highway below to allow my husband to hike in an refill the fire pump gas tank if we were barred from entering our property due to the evacuation.

Now that things have calmed down we are doing a major purge of items in order to have a more organized and less cluttered home and tool area.

We are passing on items we have not used, no longer can use or need to others or it is being recycled or taken to the dump.

As I wrote before we had the gift of time. We did not have to evacuate at a moments notice.

Sadly so many others in other areas of our state faced fire storms and all they possessed was burned. They had to leave with just a few moments notice.

We are of the belief that you can replace stuff but cannot replace your life and preserving our lives and the lives of the fire folks take precedent.

We also installed years ago an under eave heavy duty misting systems and roof top sprinkler systems that the forest service thought warranted having the tanks and hoses at our place. We installed them many years ago after that last big fire. Our place is no longer considered expendable because we made the effort to keep things pretty well cleared, invested in the fire pump, sprinkler system and tools needed to put up the foil.

Being seen at local fire update meetings, making sure your place is on the fire maps, speaking out about fire plans and talking with fire crews on your road make you visible and we think that by doing so you are not just an address but a family.

Being kind and respectful to fire crews and asking logical questions also helps a lot.

I will try to post some photos later of the gear around the house and the sprinkler and misting system.

black market preping

this is a thought that came to me this morning, would any of you use the back market to acquire preps on things as controlled drugs or other things that big bro would raise a eye to.

so some background on this.........
I have flat feet and sometimes my feet swell up and hurt, so I woke up this morning after a week of eating ibuprofen, Tyenol and Meloxicam I started looking in the med cabinet for something stronger to take the edge off. I found some Hydrocodon I was prescribe for the same problem that is two years out of date, took it with some Meloxicam and is working like a charm. so this got me thinking, would I buy preps off the black market, or bypass control laws to prep.

** this is a hypothetical question!!! If you have done this DONT post details or items**

Normal Saline bags

I don't have enough to do much good, but I do have a couple bags with tubing and supplies to start an IV if necessary.

If you're in healthcare, many hospitals dispose of supplies that are outdated, so you may be able to get your hands on them that way, but that depends on your comfort level with using expired medical supplies.

Traded for a crap chinese motorcycle review

I wanted a SHTF bike:

found a RPS Hawk 250 (there are a ton of cheapo china bikes on the market)

1. Would not be effected by EMP or CME. (nothing digital on this thing)

2. On and off road capability. (Not great at either but fair on both. Street legal I pay $3.60 a month for insurance. I doubt the knobby tires are DOT approved but so far they are OK on road)

3. 55 mph or higher top speed (I can hit 55 and eventually with sprocket change maybe 60+)

4. 300 # max capacity (I only weigh 160 and it specs at 330# max and is a full size bike, not a wee pit bike)

5. Durable and reliable (so far so good but has yet to be proved, I have beat it up off road (the welds held) and run the heck out of it on road)

6. 70 MPG + (roughly in 1 tank 80-90mpg on road mostly 3.2 gallon tank on it)

7. Light, under 300# So I could put it on a hitch carrier. (277 #)

8. Battery is fine but must kick start too (got em both)

9. Cheap....(I am on a tight budget) (Under $360 in it including parts)

I was looking on craigslist for older honda, suzuki ect. dual sport motorcycles. They are expensive, I saw this RPS hawk 250 for $1300 brand new but was never going to fork out that for a crap chinese bike. The I saw a used one an hour away a few weeks ago. I contacted the guy and he wanted $750 for it. We went back and forth and I ended up trading a chiappa .22 1911 1,000 round carton of .22lr and $100 for the bike which ran, but not well. It had sat a long time and the carb was tuned poorly so It was way lean and missing badly. I figured I could fix it (I used to be a mechanic)

I got on the interwebs and found all sorts of info on the bike. I changed the spark plug modded the air box and cleaned and re-jetted the carb. It purrs like a kitten (although very cold natured) Changed the oil too, will need a change every 700-1,000 miles or so but only 1 quart and super easy to do.

Bike has 320 miles on it now, I put 270 on it so far. I am happy with it. Will it last easily 50K miles like a DRZ 400? No, but if I get 10-15K miles out of it I am good with that.

My wife hates my feeble attempts at prepping as they cost $$$ for supplies/items that she feels are idle. But this has a multi purpose.
Transportation, recreation and is a prep. (It is a hoot to ride and my teen son likes hanging with dad again if I let him ride it. Hey I am not above bribes to spend time with my son between him working 2 jobs, school and his girlfriend and pals)

Thought I would share my experience with this "crap" bike for my first thread creation. When I get a few thousand miles on it I will check back in. So far I liken it to a chinese knock off knife as it is a honda dirtbike clone. It is way better to have a piece of crap knife than no knife at all. (I do not skimp on knives though....)

Here is a pic of my little boy riding (Well not so little he is 6'3" but darn skinny!)

This is not a perfect summary of what's going on in politics today, but it's better than what you'll find on Fox or MSNBC. The total lack of honesty and consistency in either major party has been interesting to watch, mainly in the way that the masses, the liberal and conservative bases twist themselves into knots trying to defend policies that run directly counter to what they're supposed to be standing for.

Quick fix for five gallon bucket latrine

While writing a book I once spent three months of primitive camping at a WMA in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains of North Georgia. When taking care of natures business I found the rim of the five gallon bucket very uncomfortable. My solution was to line the rim with the grey foam pipe insulation found in 4' lengths at building supply places. It comes pre- split along one edge and takes only a moment to install. Instant comfort.

The quick fix worked well but for later forays into the wilderness I used a mail order toilet seat from Amazon made to fit the bucket.

Joining the National Guard

Quick question,
Im prior service, 11 years Navy, still in great shape..except for being 41 years old...

We are moving back to the states in a year and a half and for some reason I thought it would be a good idea to see if the Michigan National Guard would consider taking me.

The guy I've been talking to that is putting me in touch with the recruiter says it should be no problem.

The question is...Am I stupid? l'll be 42 years old going through Boot and AIT all over again...

my wife is not 100% but once she understands the Guard and how it works she should be fine.

I love pawn shops

It's true what they say about owning a truck...

Went to town today to pick up a buddy's tiller.
I have a rule, I always check a "odd lots store" and one specific pawn shop. I got pork legs for $0.69/lb at the former.... I'll be firing up the smoker Sunday and the canner Monday (I've got some I set aside for pulled pork.)

But at the PAWN SHOP I picked up a Smith model 60 no dash.
It has some smooth nonoriginal (i own another) S&W medalian grips on it, but other than a very faint turn line it's flawless.
$450 OTD!

Smiths have gone up quite a bit recently... my first 60 no dash was $400....

I'll have to compare the 2 to see which is better (it'll be close) and I suspect I can get $650-$750 for the one I don't keep.

Let me gloat just a minute more....

....ok, I'm done.

New to page.

I am very bad at navigating these things and usually get frustrated and give up. I am looking for a site where I can purchase the items I need to BUG-OUT and protect my wife and six cats for two weeks until I can get to a safe place. If I am buying items, I would like them to be reusable (except for consumables) but like water purifiers and such, to protect us for as long as possible. I am talking about food, water, transportation, security, and communication, and any literature that can help me become a better survivalist.

Thanks, Vinny

Power Output Reduction if using Natural Gas

I've been reading and trying to figure out the best method to power my house. Currently I have a Dual Fuel Champion 7000W Generator. (Gas or Propane)

From my research, Gas will provide the advertised 7000W, but the problem with gasoline is 2 fold, shelf life is 12 months at best and in a SHTF scenario it would be one of the first commodities to run out of. I do have access to 100% gas.

If I use Propane I would see a cleaner running generator but no mention of power output loss. I can get a 1000 gallon tank but it would be unsightly and ruin in our back yard (lots of oak trees)

However, looking into Natural Gas (I can mod my generator for it) which I have here at the house, and from numerous threads here and other forums, it would last forever or at least for a long tie during a SHTF scenario. Although I've read if you use Natural Gas it doesn't have the heat BTU's (power generation) comparable to gas or propane. Using NG would see about a 30% hit in power generation.

Have other people found this to be true? If I go with NG what issues would I see with my generator if any??

Before people tell me get Diesel, I will once I save my pennies and can afford a nice MEP803A genset but that will be a few years down the road.

Did the Raiders Throw QB Derrick Carr under the Bus?

This is circulating under the surface. The NFL is scrambling to supress it as are the Raiders as an organization.

From the article; Amazingly, the circumstantial (and possible direct) proof didn’t end there as the show then claimed that this same source also revealed that a local team reporter got wind of the story and asked a team official for comment. What he was apparently told in response has all the hallmarks of a team trying to cover up a major scandal.
“If you report on this, you will be blackballed, you will not get access to the Raiders period,” the reporter was supposedly told. “Your career covering the team will be over”.

Bible promises from Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, ...

Bible 'promises' from the books of Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, or Malachi.

I am doing a project to find all Bible promises that I can. Some say there are hundreds of them, others say there are thousands of promises in the Bible.

I have reviewed the site TOS. I am not asking 'only' Christians because this is not a Christian-only discussion.

I have found a few websites that mention Bible promises, but they list only a few dozen.

So I have begun working through the books of the Bible to find them. For now just focusing on the books of the Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, or Malachi.

What promises can you find?

Please list them in this thread.

Thank you,
may God bless and keep you.

Hi guys, I made a video review of the Silky Big Boy 2000 XL that I'd like to share with you guys and get your thoughts on. I personally feel in love with it. I've used several others: Bahco, Fiskars, and some other brands you can get at home improvement stores. Man this thing cuts through wood like a laser! The weight isn't too bad at all considering how well it cuts.

I've taken it backpacking and we had a ton on fun making firewood. I used the Silky and my Junglas. I'm sorry but I don't have that particular Silky/Junglas tag team footage in the video review.

Antibiotic quick guideline

Guys is there a simple resource to match to complaint/infection to suggested antibiotics?

Like
1. facial skin infection, usually= xyz, abc, antibiotics
2. Tooth abcess, usually =
3. Infected animal bite=
4. Cellulitis=
5. Possible gastro bacteria=
Etc etc
Doesn't have to be too detailed, ie not after diagnosis and treatment of the above, more a quick example of what a doctor might usually treat these complaints with.

More evidence that Pretend Fighting and Pretend Hitting, doesn't really mean anything when up against trained fighters who technically are fighting to the death, on a regular basis. Trained fighters just don't kill each other b/c good sparring partners are hard to find.

Real violence usually starts out with a punch to the face, which works just the same in the ring as it does in the street. The main objective/goal is to KO someone the **** out. If you get KO'ed, not only do you lose but you can die. In the ring, rarely anyone dies due to the fight being stopped and the other guy gets a trophy....but in the street, you're unconscious and your life is now, usually, in the hands of your opponent/attacker. 2-5 stomps and/or soccer kicks to your unconscious head.... should crack your skull open, causing your brain to ooze out; and you die...if that's what he wants.

The highly effective skill set trained (and employed) to accomplished this KO and possibly ending in your death, is just regular, garden variety....BOXING. What can SAVE you from this violence, is this exact same skill set of Boxing.

Kimbo Slice vs. Boston Cop, Gannon (who later lost in his UFC debut in like under a minute to a relatively unknown Fighter): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8A2DUZNH3C0

Then if you want to get even better at Self Defense and or Offense, you would graduate to Full MMA to train more aspects of real violence.

A BJJ Blue Belt (1-1.5 year training) should be able to easily handle this guy.

Tap and die question

You will need the chart, although some taps have the correct drill size also stamped on them. The old harbor freight letter/number and decimal drill 101 bit index of titanium nitride kit was fairly good. Use at least one size bit smaller than the chart calls for first because they sometimes cut larger holes.

If you plan to many then buy a good brand, cheap crappy stuff will not last and will likely ruin your chances at a good repair. Standard kits don't have gun screws sizes.

Always use a good lube for tapping. Very important to keep the tap perpendicular to the hole when starting. When the tap starts to feel hard to turn back the tap out a turn or so to break the chips then go forward a turn or so rinse/repeat. Sometimes you need to back it all the way out - clean the tap and the hole, re lube and continue.

After starting a blind hole, you might need to finish it with a bottoming tap.

Ask someone that is experienced to show you the ropes on some scrap.

Is it worth taking out a mortgage to pay off another property

I have been pondering the prospect of refinancing one property in order to finance building our retirement home. We own vacant land that we plan to move to in about five years. I received an offer from my current mortgage servicer offering to refinance our mortgage to provide us with about $150,000 equity. If we did this our interest rate would drop about half a percent, but we would be hit with the VA funding fee (probably 5k more or less).

The up side for us would be no matter what happened with the economy, we would have a home that was paid off free and clear. From a prepping standpoint I think that's a huge advantage. The only down side I see is the VA funding fee, and an increased mortgage payment (which we can easily afford to pay).

Anyone have an opinion as to whether this is a good plan or bad?

Packit Gourmet & Prego meals

First: I have no connections whatever to businesses mentioned in title.Tried Prego rotini and meat in a can and was pleasantly surprized. Delicious! Only drawback..lid is pop top.

Made first order to Packit Gourmet in Texas. They cater to backpackers. Small to large quantities of most foods offered are available. They also offer items I've not seen elsewhere such as bison summer sausage.

Among my numerous items were shelf stable cheddar cheese and chipotle cheddar which are excellant IMO. Plus customer service is top drawer. Packaging for shipment appeared given much care.

Their packing peanuts are compostable. I'll definately order from them again.

Anyone here have an airbow?

I don't own one myself, but I have used one before.

They are cool, fun to play with, but they are heavy & require that you carry (or have nearby) a compressor of some sort to refill the tank. The one I used will only give you about 12-15 shots before you need to re-pressurize it.

If you want a cool looking toy to play with, then an airbow is for you. If you want a dedicated hunting rig, go with a crossbow. It will be alot less of a headache.

PSA Freedom Accuracy Tests

The Freedom line from Palmetto State Armory (PSA) is marketed as an economy line AR-15. One difference between the Freedom line and other PSA products, the barrels of the Freedom rifles and uppers are not chrome lined. Since chrome lining a barrel is expensive, the cost savings is passed down to the consumer.

A lot of people on YouTube call the Freedom line cheap ARs. The question is, are they cheap in quality, or just cheap in price?

Generator natural gas line questions

There are some very important calculations you need to do to figure out your gas supply, your maximum potential loads within your home, and what will be left over for your generator..
After that, you have to calculate the flow rate through the pipes and elbows, valves, etc..

For a 4000 watt generator at 20 feet, normal 3.5 - 5 in/w.c residential pressure will require a 3/4 to 1 inch line.. probably best to go with the 1 inch in case you ever want a larger generator or if you run down the pressure turning on all kinds of loads within the house.

This is important stuff.. don't wing this or it could kill you..

Republican Tax Bill

Republican Tax Program

The Republicans (Trump included) are either morons or are intentionally trying to sabotage any chance of a tax reform package passing.

Only a freakin lunatic would put out a bill that INCREASES the lower rate from 10% to 12%.

It doesn't matter if it is offset by increased deductions or tax credits.

All that matters is that they have provided the Democrats with the opportunity to say that the Republicans are raising taxes on the poorest Americans!

Unbelievable!

It is, in my opinion, hard to imagine any worse way of handling tax reform.

Lessons From Last Night

Last night, as I sat outside smoking a cigar, the wife and I kept hearing voices on the property near the gas well. I couldn't tell if it was one or two men, but fearing that my father-in-laws renters had friends or something that were up to no good down by the wells, I went inside and threw on my jeans, grabbed up a knife, .30-30, and 1911. I already had my edc light (a Thorfire PF02S). Slipped into my old ratty shoes, and away I went, looking for whoever was out there. There was nobody out by the wells, so I think we were hearing the renters have a fight, but I did learn a few things.

1. Make sure the batteries in my lights are good. This wasn't really a problem until after I'd checked where I wanted to thankfully, but it easily could have.

2.Grab the right light. As much as I like my little edc light, it's not what I would prefer for looking into the distance. I should have picked up one of my slide focus lights instead, but didn't.

3.Ratty tennis shoes aren't good for overgrown pastures. If the pasture was brush hogged, then this likely would have been less of an issue, but the tractor is in the shop for now. However, a pair of boots would have been better, and will be available as soon as the ones I ordered come in.

4.We need trails through the pasture. As stated previously, our tractor is unavailable for the time being; that said, a few trails would be good. One going to the back of the well area, one kind of in the center, and one on the east or "front". Had somebody been there last night, I would have preferred coming in from the back, so that if they ran away, I would be in no danger from their cars.

5.I need a faster system than just throwing everything on my belt at a moments notice. This is more of a preference, but I'd like to have something set up for faster responses. Either a battle belt, or a cheap tactical vest with a holster set up.

6.The desire for a weapons mounted light is stronger. Currently my only rifle is a .30-30, and while I'm hoping in the next year to get an AR, that doesn't really help right now. I would like to have had a weapons mounted light so that I'm not trying to aim a rifle and hold a flashlight at the same time.

For those who have property, or those who are in law enforcement or those who have served, did I miss anything? Oh, I was alone because my wife is on crutches, and the father in law was "watching" my son (who was asleep).

Advice on surviving a nuclear attack in a UK town?

I'm thinking the chances of this are not good, regardless of preparation. However, since I have kids I'd like to some kind of plan to improve the odds should there be any at all. The situation in with the US and North Korea looks a bit concerning, and should a world war ensue I wouldn't be surprised if the UK was the first to join with team USA. So here's what I've come up with so far:

1) Be ready to receive an alert should one come. Too bad it's not at all clear what kind of alert would be sent in my country! I imagine it may well include text message like in some other countries. I'm guessing it would still make a sound if my phone was on silent, but would not get pushed through if it's on airplane mode. So I suppose I'll have to start leaving my phone connected at night, or is there another way?

2) Hope the attack is far enough away that the main danger will be the radioactive fallout. I know chances of that would improve greatly if we moved to the countryside, but I'm not going to quit my job and uproot all our lives unless the risk starts looking a lot more immanent. Nor could I think of investing in land and a full scale bunker.

3) If away from home we follow the advice on the US government's website. If at home, I suppose we should all climb into the car maintenance pit in our detached garage and then replace the wooden cover on it (that's myself, my wife and our kids of 4 and 6). Since it's just below ground level I guess that means it's a better choice than the ground floor of our house (2 stories plus attic)? There is no better public building in our area.

4) Stay in that cramped, dark pit for 2 weeks to avoid the worst of the fallout?! There'll be about 15 tins of fish and meat + can opener, and I'll be adding more to that stock soon. Also about 20 litres of water and a British Berkefeld gravity filter to run it through in case it's gone bad (I don't see myself taking the time to replace old water often).

I imagine this would be completely awful, not to mention unhygenic. We'd also have to ration the water and food heavily. But if we were far enough away to only be hit by the fallout, my guess is that we might well end up thirsty, hungry, miserable, but alive.

I'd appreciate any of your thoughts on this plan!

The Left and their final solution for America

Almost weekly do we see another attack from the left on American values. They claimed Russia decided our elections, they told us that our police are murderous racist who do nothing but kill innocent black people.

-Then we all witnessed the attacks on history itself with the removal of statues and landmarks across the country. A move that was right from the ISIS playbook.

-My wife a public school teacher and other white teachers are being blamed for not understanding the black child and how he/she should be educated. They are being forced to teach lies about black history and more specifically black inventions that never happened.

-Now we are being told that it's okay to kneel, turn our backs, not come out of the locker room or otherwise disrespect our most sacred national anthem. Even school children are emulating these behaviors.

What's so shocking is that America is the most tolerant, most giving, most prosperous, most successful, most benevolent, most accepting nation in the history of the world. It's become cool to disrespect this great nation.

No our nation hasn't been perfect in every single action but I would put up America to any nation on this planet in the history of mankind by far.

The Final Solution:

(IMHO) the left wants to create such a level division and general chaos that we'll see the forceful removal of our President, members of Congress or anyone else they label as "racist" or "haters" that will be defined by the leftist powers. Then the re-writing of our Constitution and bill of rights. They simply can't do it with these pesky elections that have so frustrated them.

That's my take. Am I wrong?

Understanding Bread and Circuses

Rife throughout forum posts, twitter blather and facebook entries are several expressions that have become used so much they've lost their meaning to the bedraggled masses - if the mob understood these meaning in the first place - and have become what is known as logic-terminating clichés/tropes.

Some examples are:

"this is so Orwellian", or "history is repeating itself", and "it's all bread and circuses".

There are many more, but for this thread we're going to look at the last one, its historical and cultural significance, and how it applies to civilization and history. To extract most benefit from the thread, it's recommended to keep aloof from personal biases and look at our own nations as if from the point of a future historian, studying the past.

For the purposes of this post, general entertainment will be included with bread and circuses.
________________________________________

"Bread and Circuses", Latin, Panem et Circenses, has been misquoted and misunderstood in the modern era, thanks in large part to the corrosive influence of Hollywood, and earlier due to spread of Jacobean, predominantly Revolutionary French, writers and painters, who frequently cherry picked Roman culture and history to suit their ends of portraying Western Civilization as in a constant state of rot. Some ahistorical cinema examples being to the effect of; "He'll give the people bread and circuses, and he'll love them for it."

More recently, the teen girl's author Suzan Collins, in a frenzy of unoriginality, has vivisected whole swaths of Roman history for her Hunger Games series, even being so droll as to label that world's evil capitol as 'Panem'.

So, the implication is that of a ruler, normally depicted as a tyrant, placating the unruly, dissatisfied citizenry with free food and sports events to distract them from their daily woes.

There's a pressing irony here, because this is exactly what Hollywood does.

But let's take a closer look at bread, sports, entertainment and how these things can be used to chart with fair accuracy where a civilization is, and where it's headed.

"Panem et circenses" is first attributed to the Roman poet and satirist, Decimus Junius Juvenalis (Juvenal), who lived during the 1st century AD, though the exact dates are disputed.

It's important to understand that by this time the Roman Republic was long gone, however its legacy and the benefits of its achievement still remained. We'll need to revisit pre-imperial Rome to understand bread and circuses more clearly, but for now, here is Juvenal's direct quote, taken from his Tenth Satire:

iam pridem, ex quo suffragia nulli uendimus, effudit curas; nam qui dabat olim imperium, fasces, legiones, omnia, nunc se continet atque duas tantum res anxius optat, panem et circenses

Those who read Latin can fully appreciate Juvenal's genius at placement and turn of phrase. The English:

Already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, the People have abdicated our duties; for the People who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions — everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses

For once Wikipedia is very accurate in describing Juvenal's intent, and how it fits within the context of his civilization at the time, and here we see some of the term's deeper meaning:

" identifies the only remaining cares of a Roman populace which no longer cares for its historical birthright of political involvement. Here Juvenal displays his contempt for the declining heroism of contemporary Romans, using a range of different themes including lust for power and desire for old age to illustrate his argument"

In other words, the issue was not merely a matter of 'football and EBT cards' for the mob, but that ethnic Romans themselves had become so dissolute, so nihilistic and so removed from legitimate political interest concurrent and part in parcel with political power using food and entertainment to control them.

Commendably, Wikipedia references the origin of the 'Panem' part, ie, free food, known the modern colloquial as 'the grain dole' and in Rome as the Annonia.

Now, here's the important part for our purposes of examining this from a civilizational perspective: The Annonia was passed several hundred years before, by one of Rome's earliest and most famous 'social justice warriors', Gaius Gracchus in 123 BC.

So, it's to early Republican Rome that we must journey in the thread's next post, to examine what both the Romans -and the modern West- were, are and will be.

Apologies if this introduction seems round-a-bout, but things will become more clear as we gather some commonly understood terms and histories.

Gun grabbers accidentally admit the truth?

This is a letter from OC DA Tony Rackaukus asking Jerry Brown not to sign a new bill that lowers the standard for criminals in cases where they use a gun. Although I agree with Mr. Rackaukus on the absurdity of the new bill I couldn't help but realize he (a RINO?) let's it slip they are systematically trying to inhibit legal gun owners. Violent Protests: Is Antifa necessary?

This is an article written by a Canadian that appears to be Middle Eastern and probably Muslim. That is my conjecture:

Abdullah Shihipar is a writer based in Toronto. His work has appeared in Jacobin, ThinkProgress, NOW Magazine and CANADALAND.

"Even if one disagrees with Nazis, surely, there are better ways of dealing with them than through methods of violence. I once held this position until I started going to anti fascist rallies in my city and witnessed for myself what transpires. Anti-fascist violence is fundamentally misunderstood. Dismissed as reckless and unnecessary, it is actually a last resort tactic that is born out of necessity and meticulous planning."

A Canadian Muslim justifying violence. Not in the least ironic is it. This is the far left lunatic mindset we are dealing with. I believe it is extremely dangerous to you and I and to law and order. The author States there are six deaths caused by "white supremacists". Really? Where? When?

This article justifying vigilante violence over thoughts, beliefs and free speech. I do not condone white supremacists or Nazi's that seem to be everywhere to Antifa. Im a supporter of President Trump, the Constitution, Bible and our men and women in uniform and law enforcement! According to Antifa that makes me a Alt Right Nazi or ?????? I think.

Otto Warmbier was inhumanely destroyed by North Korea.

there are a couple problems i have with this story.. first, it seems to contradict the doctors who looked at him after he arrived back in the united states and said they found no signs of torture or abuse and that the brain damage was consistent with respiratory arrest consistent with the claims of botulism

then, when the US is on the brink of attacking north korea they come out with this pity campaign that goes against everything the official reports and the doctors said.. and come up with these tales of rampant abuse that do not seem to be consistent with the results of the medical examinations?

seems a bit too well timed as if somebody is looking for a martyr to rally people against NK, as if we actually need one, but given the number of lefties coming out in support of NK, maybe we do

could use some prayers

My most faithful and loyal watchdog is in bad shape. likely going to have to have her put down tomorrow so she is no longer suffering.

Was coughing up blood at the vet today and is having a very hard time breathing.

Plan to give her as much love as possible tonight and pray for a miracle. (we went to the vet this afternoon and a few weeks ago and that (prayer) is what she 'needs' right now)

Trying to keep her calm as possible now. She refused a can of tuna tonight... Still drinking water but refusing food like that is a very bad sign.

Anyone in northern MI to teach me canning?

Hi, there! I live in northern MI, about 45 minutes east of the bridge. I'd love to find someone very knowledgeable in canning (mostly pressure canning, but water bath, too) who would be willing to spend a couple of sessions helping to teach me how to can meat, veggies, and sauces so I can feel comfortable doing it on my own. I've canned a few jellies years ago, but that's about it. I'm a pretty adept cook, so this wouldn't be a cooking lesson. More of a "putting up" lesson.

Would be willing to pay. Or trade jars/lids in exchange for time and knowledge.

Thanks!

Do you hand out candy on Halloween?

I live near some pretty bad neighborhoods. Half the kids don't even show up in costume, or have a bag. I am always happy to see them because I have the gospel stuff in the bag with the candy (I do up a baggy with a scripture booklet [www.wmpress.org], full sized snickers, and some other candy).

I also hand out bags (empty t-shirt bags) to kids to need them. I always have several kids needing bags.

We have fun, nothing demonic about it, but the vehemence of some is really astounding.

Would you buy a 2009 northern truck? rust?

I wouldn't care if it was rust free, $15k for a 'burban going on 9 years old with 140k miles is steep. $10-11k max is more inline with local prices in my area for that truck. Unless you absolutely need the extra cargo room with the 3rd row up I would look into Tahoe's. They are a lot more common on the secondary market and tend to be more reasonably priced.

As for rust, it all depends on the previous owners and how diligent they were. If it was stored in a garage and/or sprayed down after driving in salty slush/mush that the roads are covered in after a big storm it could still be as clean as a southern or western truck.

You left us way too soon.

I
Bemis paused halfway up the hill and took a quick glance behind him. Something had spooked him. Although it wasn’t hard nowadays. He was always spooked.
He decided to catch his breath before cresting the hill. He had been moving steadily since noon-only pausing once to eat a light lunch. Light lunch. That was a laugh, like he had a choice.
He squatted, trying to keep his butt out of the snow. After resting this way for only a few seconds, his legs began to hum with inactivity. It felt so good, he gave up and just sat down, leaning against a large walnut tree. He had sat down in two inches of snow, but he didn’t care much, he was soaked to the skin anyway.
He shrugged off the small book-bag that had once belonged to his son and placed it in his lap.
Tied to the exterior of the book bag was a sleeping bag with a foam pad. This was Bemis’s house, or had been for almost four weeks anyway.
He reached in his shirt, got out his canteen and looked around. All he had seen for the past week was ambient light. He had not seen the sky in seven days- and there were no shadows. At twilight, there were faint shadows and even sometimes then you really had to look. It just suddenly got dark. There was enough light to see, but everything was cloaked in grey. The sun was still doing its job, but it was nowhere to be seen in the deep winter sky. Judging from the detail he could make out on the canteen, Bemis figured he had maybe ninety minutes until dark. He would have to find a place to stay for the night soon. He scanned three hundred and sixty degrees, listening closely, watching intently and he heard no noise, other than a rustle from an errant wind whipping through the stark branches.
In all his forty-three years, Bemis had never in his life felt so alone. So completely and utterly alone. It scared him a little, because he was getting to the point now where he did not care. But he still had his wife at home and she needed to know what happened. She was the only thing that kept him going. Bemis was very tired.
He swallowed the last of the water from his now empty canteen and began filling it with snow. That done, Bemis placed it in his shirt, shivered, picked up Grady’s book bag and stood up, brushing the snow from his worn and now completely butt-soaked tan Carhartt pants.

Bemis took several more steps and after two deep breaths, crouched and slowly made his way to the top of the ridge.
When he was near, he lay down and slowly inched his way to the crest. Surely this would be it. Bemis thought feverishly, I don’t think I can go much further. His stomach fluttered and he peered over the crest. There weren’t any tents or shacks, just three boulders, each capped with a slight dusting of snow. He gave the area a final scan, looking for danger but seeing none, stood up slowly, brushed the snow off himself and walked down the hill, his eyes already searching for the next one. They have to be behind a hill, right? He thought. I mean where else could they be? I know I am headed the right way.
After crossing the small ridge past the boulders, Bemis came to a flat, wide gravel road a hundred feet or so from the tree line he just exited. It seemed to be fairly well maintained. It had been plowed of snow recently, in the last week or two anyway- since it had not snowed since Bemis had gotten away. He could even still see faint tire impressions. Bemis looked left and then right. After one more glance each way, he slowly began walking left. East, he thought. He hoped.
Bemis walked in a tire track. This was where the snow was the lightest. He would pause occasionally and listen for vehicles, afraid a vehicle would pull up behind him. After he had walked ten minutes or so, he thought he seen a large building directly ahead of him in the distance. It looked to be tan colored, but he couldn't be sure. He crouched quickly. It was at least a quarter mile away, but he took no chances now. Still crouching, he headed back to the tree line, duck -walking as quickly as he could. He then disappeared into it.
Twenty-minutes later, Bemis came to within thirty feet of a large faded grey building. It looked to be a 30’X80’ pre-fabbed steel building, but a very high quality one. Bemis got as close as he dared and stopped, crouching behind a Sweetgum tree. It was getting close to twilight and he had seen no lights burning on, or in, the building. He watched and listened a few more seconds, for that was all he could spare. He considered walking back into the trees and sheltering somewhere for the night, then get a good look in the morning- what there was of that anyway- but he needed to know. He had not slept in a man-made structure in sometime, and the lure of sleeping off the ground and maybe even finding something to eat was too great not to investigate. Plus he was tired. So very tired. He slowly stood.

II
Thirty-three days earlier.

“Ok, after we stop in the next town-”. Bemis began.
“Ahh, man.” “We stopping again?” Grady- Bemis’s fifteen-year-old son- said with agony.
“If we don’t stop now, we’ll have to come back out to get the ice, grub and bait.”
“I know, I know.” Grady said resignedly. He brightened slightly. “Just a couple things though right?” “Quick?” “In and out?” Grady asked hopefully. “Think we’ll get there before dark?”
Bemis grabbed his phone from the dash and looked at the time. “Should, with about an hour to spare.”
“Cool.” Grady lifted his phone in front of his face, glanced at the screen then put it back in his pocket.
Colleen. Bemis thought with amusement.
“You keep checkin’ that thing.” “ Expecting a text?” Bemis asked distractedly reaching for the CD player to skip a track.
“Yeah.” “Can’t figure out why she hasn’t texted me back.”
“Well, better get it all figured out now, because once we get there-“
“Yeah. I know.” “That’s why I need to hear back now.”
“So what’s the deal?” Bemis asked, skipping yet another track. It was a new CD.
“Well, I asked her out to see the new Expedition movie. Expedition III- Durward’s Last Stand. It’s coming out next week and she hasn’t texted me back, so I don’t know if she-“
“Wait.” Bemis glanced sideways at his son. “You asked her out via text?”
“Well, yeah.”
“Holy Crap son!” “That is not how you….” Bemis’s voice trailed off as they crested a small rise.
“Crap, another one?” “Whats the deal anyway? “Bemis said with unmasked annoyance. “Thought this was all over with.” “We’re like a hundred miles south of Engleburg.”
“Colleen’s dad says it won’t let up anytime soon.” Grady said proudly. “He’s a Federal Police Commander you know.”
“Yeah, I heard that.” Bemis said, rolling his eyes.
“Lame.”
Grady was referring to a state of panic gripping most of the country for the past two weeks or so.
According to CNN,Fox and MSNBC; it had all started nine days earlier: A coordinated effort by several alleged ISIS cells had targeted three US cities; Atlanta, Chattanooga and Boise.
In a span of twelve hours, there were six fire bombings directed at six Post Offices and four DMV’s. Fifteen police cars nationwide had been attacked; three with weapons, the others with Molotov’s and the like. Graffiti had been sprayed on several police and federal buildings, most of which stated the superiority of Islam.
But-according to some of the blogs Bemis read fairly regularly- it was not as bad as they reported. Nowhere near. As a matter of fact, most agreed that it all boiled down to a lone Syrian refugee upset at losing his job at a small law office in Boise. He walked into his ex-workplace with a shotgun and wounded three before being dispatched by a security guard. All of the other ‘incidents’ were blown way out of proportion by the mainstream media.
The newly-elected first female President of the United States decided to mobilize The National Guard and then, utilizing members from various law enforcement agencies, created the first ever Federal Police Force to try and find the remaining members of the terrorist cells. Madam President Obama, was applauded by the left saying that she was making the country and it’s citizens safer, while others said that the people that were being detained were not terrorists at all. Bemis had read that anyone that was on any federal watch lists-which included citizens that were NRA members, all CCW holders, militia members and any others that the administration labelled ‘extremists’ were looked at very closely. He wasn’t sure he believed it all though.

Bemis slowed as he approached a US Army National Guard soldier rolling down his window. He turned down the CD player.
“Good evening Sir.” Said the SSG as Bemis stopped the Dodge.
“Sergeant.” Bemis said curtly, already holding out his driver’s license and registration.
The Sergeant, whose name was Pickering, took Bemis’s offered info and glanced at them quickly, eyes scanning the photo, name, birthday and address of one Bemis Shogren. His attention then was on a small tablet strapped to his wrist.
“Where are you headed?” He asked coolly while typing furiously, eyes unreadable behind his Oakleys.
“Lake Stafford.” “Campground.” Bemis said.
Sgt. Pickering turned his head towards the slide in camper in the bed of Bemis’s truck and quickly back towards the cab and Bemis.
“Anyone in the camper sir”?
“Not unless there’s a stowaway.” Bemis smiled.
Sgt.Pickering did not smile.
“Mind if we verify that sir? “He asked professionally.
At this, two soldiers that must have been standing his blind spot, took two steps forward. They suddenly appeared in his side mirror. The maneuver had its desired effect. He was scared.
While Bemis was ****ed at what was sure to be a violation of his rights, and what was an unwarranted search, he knew that it was in his best interest and better in the long run to let them check, he nodded and said; “Of course Sergeant, let me open it up for you.” Bemis started to place the truck in park.
Sgt. Pickering quickly grabbed Bemis’s shoulder. “That won’t be necessary sir.” He said.
Bemis relaxed slightly and placed his hands back on the steering wheel.
“Thank you for cooperating.” Sgt. Pickering said removing his hand and handing Bemis back his license and registration. “Proceed approximately three miles ahead and pull off the road at the flashing yellow sign and shut off your engine.” “Someone will assist you there.” “Move along.” “Have a nice evening.”
Sgt. Pickering stepped away from Bemis’s door waving his hand.
Bemis drove on, dreading what was coming.
They had set up at what appeared to be an old semi-weigh station, running alongside Route 25. Route 25 was a well maintained two lane that ran the length of the state. As he drew near, Bemis seen three generator-powered light trees each positioned beside three sectioned off areas of parking lot.
There were three colors. Inspection Area Red, the sign said. Then there was an Inspection Yellow. And lastly- Inspection Area Black. There was a vehicle parked in the Black space but no one was around it, the doors, trunk and hood open.
In front of the three inspection areas, directly across from Bemis’s yellow space, were three Federal Police pursuit vehicles and one black Dodge Charger.
Three Federal Police and two men wearing suits with blue coats stood in a small circle by the vehicles.
“Oh, this is not good.” Bemis said softly to himself. “ Not good at all.”
A Federal Police broke off from the circle and walked briskly up to Bemis’s door.
“Good evening, Sir.” “Please place the vehicle in park with the e-brake engaged and step out.”
“My son-“
“I apologize sir.” He said impassively. And with no sincerity at all, Bemis thought. “Everyone must exit the vehicle.” Bemis noticed that as he said this, the two remaining Federal Police Officers and the FBI guys or whatever they were-turned and faced Bemis’s truck.
“Yes officer.” Bemis replied as calmly as he could. He turned to Grady as he placed the Dodge in park and turned off the ignition. “You heard the man.” And softer Bemis said, “No sudden movements.”
Grady’s eyes widened. Bemis slapped Grady’s shoulder softly while unbuckling his seat belt. “It’s not a big deal, but these guys might be a little nervous.” “Let’s not do anything to make them any jumpier.” “Cool”?
Grady nodded. He was a good kid and definitely not stupid. Bemis was a proud dad.
Bemis reached for the door handle and as the door began to swing open, he noticed that one of the three Federal Police moved forward quickly and stopped by the headlight on Grady’s side of the truck.
“Is there anyone else in the truck Sir?” The Federal Police asked, head tilting to the camper in the bed. “A friend or spouse maybe?”
Bemis shook his head no and looking in the officer’s eyes said, “No sir.”
Bemis-who had a cousin in the FBI and a close friend who was a town Fed Cop-always told him to:
A, never lie to law enforcement. Most can tell when you are-as they deal with liars every day, all day and they do not like it.
B, look them in the eye when talking to them, not to establish authority or some macho crap, but rather; to let seem see that you aren’t lying to them.
C, let them know they are in charge. Swallow your pride- but swallow it just the same, because they are in charge.
The Federal Police Captain looked at Bemis, nodded slightly and, “May I see your license and registration please?”
“Yes.” “Registration is in the roof console.” Bemis had a habit of putting everything back where it belonged. His wife said it was OCD, but Bemis was starting to forget where he put stuff-so he put everything back where it belonged
The Captain nodded and took a half step back.
Bemis leaned on the seat and opened the small drawer between the sun visors and pulled out the registration.
Holding his registration, as Bemis reached for his wallet, Bemis noticed the Federal Police by the headlight had now moved from the headlight to the passenger door and stopped.
Bemis pulled out his wallet and extracted his Driver’s License . Behind that, was his concealed carry license. Noticing it, Bemis realized that he had forgotten to tell the National Guardsman a checkpoint earlier that he was carrying. He felt his face slowly drain of blood.
Bemis quickly glanced at the Captain-who was now typing on his own wrist tablet- and held out his license. He wondered when he should tell the cop he had a Kimber Ultra Carry in .45 ACP on his hip. His mind worked feverishly. He realized he should have told them at once, like he had at the previous two checkpoints. They also had him pull off to the side and after conferring for ten minutes or so, they let him go, but this stop had a different vibe. These boys were not here to protect him, he felt, but quite the opposite. I gotta tell him now. I waited too long already. Bemis opened his mouth to speak.
The Federal Police and the two ATF agents on site knew Bemis was coming. Previous checkpoints had been instructed to allow Bemis to proceed until he arrived at a location where the proper facilities were available. Bemis Shogren; age 43, was designated as ‘subversive’ by the ATF and DHS.
Bemis did, in fact, belong to the NRA. He belonged to no militia, but he was a CCW holder and his name showed up often in the NICS database. Bemis suffered from ‘Blue Steel Disease’ and as a result had filled out many background check forms over the years. There is no cure. One treatment, however, suggests getting a larger gun safe.
Grady shut his door gently and began walking towards the front of the truck, glancing back as his dad leaned in the cab. The Federal Cop watched him closely.
Probably getting the registra- Grady was thinking when his phone vibrated.
Hurriedly, he reached in his coat pocket- already formulating his response depending on Colleen’s answer. He heard shouting and looked up to a Federal Police standing in front of him raising his pistol. Why is he aiming at me? Grady thought distractedly. Those were his last thoughts.
“Officer-”
Bemis’s first word had barely escaped his mouth when he heard shouting on the passenger side of the truck, he turned to see Grady by the front fender.
“GUN!” The Fed Cop had shouted, then drew his weapon and fired three rounds into his son’s chest. Bemis seen the tufts of smoke as the rounds penetrated.
Grady stood for a moment with a confused look on his face, then collapsed, his phone tumbling out of his hand when he hit the ground, dead.
The screen was lit with Colleen’s answer.
