This caught my eye because he might be the guy I saw on Youtube paddling his kayak around the flooded part of our development near the Brazos River after Hurricane Harvey. Can't really tell though, because a lot of guys did this in different areas and housing developments look similar especially when flooded.

Soon afterward, he went through a week of emergency surgeries and treatment to save his life. A mosquito bite gave the bacteria a path to enter his system and he is lucky to be alive.

I didn't realize that over 600,000 people get this flesh eating bacteria a year. Kinda puts wading or any other contact with flood waters into an extreme hazard category. Fishing hip waders should be considered as part of flood preparation I think, followed by a serious decontamination if wading in the flood water is unavoidable.

I don't know how long the bacteria persist on flood contaminated debris, but they are urging extreme caution when touching anything that has been flooded.

The bright spot of the news story is that researchers have discovered something fascinating about the bacteria that they think will soon lead to much more effective treatment. They say the bacteria chemically communicates among itself via the toxins it releases. A pathway that they can disrupt.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
