Building a Safe Room

In my home the furnace room is cement block on all 4 sides and a heavy fire door into the rest of the basement. All it would take is a bit of re enforcement of the door latch, a phone line, a flashlight and a gun to make it a pretty good safe room.

With a maul someone could get in, but that is where the gun would come in handy.

To retrofit a home that is already build could you drill hole large holes into the sheetrock between the studs near the top then start filling the cavities with cement? You would have to do it in small layers so it doesn't get so heavy it pushes out the sheetrock, as well as to keep the amount of moisture down. Once the cavities were full plaster up the holes.

Or if you don't mind removing the sheetrock from one side of the wall you could fill the cavities with mortared brick then put up new sheetrock, or heavy plywood to allow mounting things to the wall. From there a heavy door would finish it. If a person is a DIY type they could do this method in a couple weekends for well under $1000. You would have to make sure the floor could handle the weight. It would still be vulnerable from above and below but it would be much better than just a sheetrock room with a hollow core door.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
