I call it "trash tracking"
I started two wheeling in the 60s, and it was common knowledge then..NOT to ride in the center track of the street/highway lanes. That is where all the "trash" would gather, being oil droppings, shards of metal, tacks, nails, glass, all the crap that the two car tracks would pick up or grind away.
I watch all forms of two wheel rides, cruise right down the middle, models of bikes of every style, with riders of all ages. Are that many riders ignorant of the higher potential for a flat tire from all the debris that the center track gathers? In this forum for surviving, why are so many riders showing the lack of good sense.

I personally have never heard of it, other than at intersections, until now.

I suppose it also depends on your location. A busy road in southern California where there is little rain to wash off the oil will be much slipperier than a road in a small town that gets rain several times a week.

On a bike I have never experienced a road being slippery at the beginning of a rain from spilled oil floating to the surface but I have experienced it in LA in a van in a light rain after three months of no rain.

What I have experienced on a bike is the paint stripes being slick as ice when they are wet.
