A LOT of malls have closed their doors which would make great little cities for low income or homeless families with the big box anchor stores being where they can make thousands of small rooms they can live in, and converting the stores throughout the malls as different shops that can make things or sell items for both the residents and outside clients..
When I was in the Air Force I was deployed to Haiti and we stayed in a very large warehouse. Each person had their own room made out of plywood and 2x4's. You had a bed up on a platform with drawers made underneath, a 19 or 20" TV, a dormitory refrigerator, and we all used one of the 4 large bathroom areas with showers, sinks, and toilets. All those K-Marts are the same kind of place.. They have heat, A/C, bathrooms, might have to add showers.. One of those stores could be up and running in a couple of weeks time.
No smoking, no loud music, no drugs, no guns, hire a few security guards, make some storage areas out of the same plywood so they can put their belongings they don't use all the time in there..
Each room had a simple lock with a padlock on it... The tops of the rooms had screens over them and the floors were throw rugs, usually about 6'x10' in size.
The large parking lots can be for those that have RV's or to set up a Saturday Market bringing in vendors or selling things the homeless make.
Put some kind of factory in part of the store area and you could run it 24/7 and give the homeless a chance to get back on their feet again.
Have a theater so they can show movies, have meetings, bring counselors, have job fairs, etc..
Just imagine how many people you could get off the streets and give them a hand up..
If it was good enough for our troops, it's gotta be better than blue tarps with rips in them..
Those corporations that still own the vacant buildings could donate them and use the loss as a huge tax write off..
I think my next step is to copy this email and send it to the local news stations, maybe a few politicians, see if they'll even reply..
Why spend $80k on a house for a family when you can spend $800 and give them a warm and dry place to live and help them get back on their feet?
Get some retired busses to take folks to locations around town once they get jobs..
Offer a library with computers so they can find jobs..
The list goes on and on but.. You can house several hundred homeless in a space that's just going to rot away if it doesn't get used..
Any thoughts??
