Naming your kids, it could haunt them for life

I don't drive, and don't have paratransit. Walmart is an hour and a half away, one way, on the bus. Or I can spend $40 round trip on a cab, assuming I can find a cab to take me home.

Recently I discovered Walmart delivery. It has been great for me, $8 plus tip and they come right to my door, when I want it.

Today's driver was a very nice man, black, very helpful. I liked him, hope to get him again.

After he left I checked my email and was horrified to see his name. It was a "creative" spelling of a pretty common name. Like "Jawn". I won't put his name up because this thread could come back to him - it was a very odd spelling.

And it got me thinking about "creative" names and how they often curse the child for life. Everyone who sees that name is going to make assumptions.

In this case, if I had seen the name before I met the man, I would have assumed he was an ignorant thug, and wouldn't have wanted to turn my back on him. But he couldn't have been farther from that. Not many guys would have been so "cool" handling a bag with a female product in it , but he just said "I think you should carry this".

I know you will not curse your child with a ghetto name, but I feel so bad for all the adults thus cursed. People make conclusions when they see your name. Good or bad.

My first name is Heather. Middle aged white lady with a ponytail and glasses? Yup. Pretty accurate for me. But there's some poor "Wyntor" running around out there trying to get a job.

Many parents don't realize the power they have when they are naming their children.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
