Palmetto Dedicated .22lr upper and BCG -delayed first look.

I delayed posting this because I was hoping that my problems with this upper receiver were going to fade away after a breaking in period. Sadly this did not occur.

From what I can tell, this is a rebranded CMMG (same patent numbers on the tang of the BCG.

I have owned the CMMG conversion with the CMMG poly charging handle (as opposed to a standard charging handle, more about that later) and they function great but because the barrel needs a more aggressive twist rate to be accurate, they were not really a great grouping out past 15 or 20 yards.

The dedicated upper receiver has a 1-16 twist rate.

That is the best part, so far, with this package. I can touch a full magazine at 25 yards with ease. I haven't tried it outside yet as the weather has not been very cooperative lately.

Accuracy seems to be the only plus, so far. I am using the recommended Black Dog magazines (The CMMG mags are a pain to use and the BD mags work better than the factory mags with the conversion kit.)

The first issue was the included charging handle. They say it should work fine but my experience with the conversion kit taught me that if it gets the least bit dirty, spent cases will start to get caught in them.

Palmetto CS agreed to sell me the dedicated charging handle and refund the shipping. I really wish that they would either include it or at least make it an option. At $15, the cost would seem to be cheaper but who knows?

I installed the new handle when it arrived today and that problem went immediately away. It's still a jam-O-matic.

One thing I noticed was that the extractor spring was no where near as strong as the one on my conversion kit. I recently traded it to someone and now wish that I had kept it to try a swap. (the only thing different is the the head. CMMG sells the same head for those who buy one of their dedicated barrels and want's to use the same BCG that comes with the kit.

The other issue is that after a mag or two a build up forms at the end of the chamber. It seems like the chamber was cut too long. The result is that often the cartridge gets stuck in the chamber and will not full load.

I just shipped it back to Palmetto. I would have like to exchange it but they don't have any in stock. The first CSR suggested a swap right off the bat but then found out that they were on back order.

The guy today resisted that, saying they needed to try and fix the problem first.

Here's hoping that they can get it to work right. I was really impressed with the accuracy but need to be able to fire more than one or two magazines before having to break it down and completely cleaning the upper.

Anyway, it's already on its way back to Palmetto. Fingers crossed.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
