Public storage unit

The area I live in is suburban with close access to freeways and very close to a major, yet dangerous urban center. I am 5-10 miles from the city center. Not the ideal place but it's where I'm at for now and the foreseeable future.

I have preps here at my house and a small prepper community that all live close. We do have a "but out" spot that is a few hours away. This area is FAR more rural. The bug out location has supplies and stores from the group.

My issue is I don't like putting all my eggs in the same basket? I've been doing some research on public storage units. Why? The area I live in has been prone to flooding over the years, the last one was in 2015 where about 75% of the block had raw sewage back up into their basements.

My ammo and food stores are up off the ground on the basement as is my in house water. But... If something like this happens again and our sewage backs up, I will be cleaning EVERYTHING or throwing it away.

I would NOT store any firearms or ammo, only food, and camping supplies if I had to hastily bug out and a sewage issue arises. I'd have a few days of food and supplies read for me with less intense cleaning.

Does anyone do the storage unit prep? Any horror stories? I've seen both pros and cons. The units I'm looking at are within 3 miles and secured, temperature controlled.

I'd love to get some feedback and ideas on this.
