Baofeng UV-5R Spurious Emissions Test

A friend and I did a quick test of the Baofeng UV-5R's reputation for spurious emissions, comparing it with the much more expensive Yaesu VX-6. The Baofeng did have more numerous and higher power unintentional transmissions, but the Yaesu isn't immune to the problem.

The Yaesu's transmissions were less obnoxious than the UV-5R, but not enough to justify its $250 price tag (vs about $25 for the Baofeng). That said, the Yaesu's other features account for a lot of that cost--much better menu interface, submersible to 30', 900 channels in memory, 1.25m transmit, etc.

I'll keep the Baofengs so I can put two in each vehicle's emergency kit, but I plan to get a VX-6 in the future because it's a better radio. (But first, an FT-818 is on the list.)

Anyway, full test is here: http://www.tothewoods.net/Comms-Baof...-Emissions.php
