Are Surplus Gas Masks Worth A Damn?

I keep getting mixed reviews on Surplus Masks. Some say they work, some say they dont. Obviously each type is different I know. But in general, do they work at all? If any, what models? I'm not worried about them stopping nuclear fallout, I don't have a bunker so in that event, I'm screwed regardless, but id like something that can protect against chemical and biological for at least long enough to get out of dodge. Any suggestions?
