Bacitracin vs. Benzalkonium

I'm finally getting around to hashing out my various first aid kits, and I could use a little input. Most of my kits (one in the house, one in the car, one the my EDC, on in my backpacking pack, etc) started life as a prefab kit which I then supplemented with some additions. However, I never went through and really analyzed what was in the kits in the first place, and how they should best be used. Until now.

I've noticed that most of the kits contain two topical antibiotics: a "triple antibiotic" (bacitracin zinc, neomycin sulfate, polymyxin b ointment) and a "first aid cream" (benzalkonium chloride and lidocaine hydrochloride). I believe they are commonly marketed at Neosporin and Bactine, respectively.

On the surface these two items seem redundant. I'd like to cut out as many redundancies in my kit as I can, for purposes of weight (backpacking) and streamlining the kit so it can be used as efficiently as possible.

Besides the obvious difference (the second product contains a pain reliever, lidocaine), what's the difference between the two? Is there a reason they've both been provided in the same kit (besides allergy risk)? Should they be used differently, or should one be used in place of the other in certain circumstances?

Thanks!
