Best Way to Insulate Quonset Hut?

I'm in the aviation world. We've used all manner of wood, concrete and steel buildings to house and maintain our aircraft. Including huge Quonset huts.

In the end, it's been better to simply use a conventional steel building. While the rounded profile of a Quonset saves some material, and it's form is strong, it's difficult to deal with.

We've tried the spray on insulation, with rather poor results. It tends to fall off in sheets and after a few years, it's surface starts to deteriorate. Leading to "droppings" of insulation on a daily basis. Making it difficult to keep clean.

I know we would like to think that spray on insulation will hold up. We've found the opposite. It's ugly and troublesome. And, it's not cheap.

Proper insulation consists of a barrier on either side, along with a medium to trap air movement. That's why rolled fiberglass insulation looks like it does. Interestingly, rolled fiberglass insulation is often installed improperly and is then, less effective.

Here in the South, it's best to have a white roof, to keep solar heat out. As the heat of a dark roof will radiate right through fiberglass and drywall and into the interior.

I'd suggest a rectangular steel building with conventional fiberglass insulation, with the barrier on the inside.

While this works and is easy, my experience has been less than positive.

Better!

Again, the rounded profile of a Quonset will add much complication to your plans. In the end, I know it's easier to use a rectangular shape.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
