Which is better for home defence: 0.45 or 9mm?

Hello everyone. After breaking my toe in an archery accident yesterday, I have decided archery is not for me. I am looking at purchasing a firearm for home defence. I will then take lessons to gain proficiency.

I have been asking people's opinions on which is the best for home defence and they have been giving me conflicting views as to which to get. Some are saying that 9mm is the most reliable they have ever used and is perfectly adept at dropping any assailants in one shot instantly. One even claimed it has 10 inches of penetration, which is thicker than any bullet proof vest I have heard of. They said they would prefer it to a shotgun. Others suggest I use the .45 as it is a beast and that I am being a cheap skate buying the inferior and less powerful 9mm. One pointed out the higher magazine capacity of 9mm guns and said it will serve me well in a shootout should I ever face a home intruder. Another pointed out that I won't need a second shot with the .45. The point is, I know nothing about these guns and would like the opinions of seasoned survivalists on here. Personally, I want whichever is the Dirty Harry gun, as I think it will be a good deterrent. My philosophy is that anyone who sees a huge hand cannon will turn tail and run.
