Jack Hinson Rifle Question

This shot doesn't appear to possible with his rifle. Am I mistaken?

I'm reading Jack Hinson's One-Man War by Tom C. McKenney. I'm really enjoying it!

The book describes Hinson's rifle as having a fixed, V notch rear sight.

The book states that Hinson made a 600 yard shot and killed the Captain of a Union boat as it moved through a choke point. Minié ball and 100 gr of Black Powder.

Rough calculations mean that he would have had to aim approximately 20' above the target at that range.

The actual rifle is in the pic below.

I'm well aware that long distance hits are/were achieved with muzzle loaders. I believe those rifles had ladder sights or scopes.
