The secrets you take to your grave

Many of us have them, things we can never share because the truth of them is too awful to share.

I don't mean crimes, or terrible things we've done.

I mean things that were done to us by others. I also mean unintended consequences (from our actions as well as the actions of others) that harmed us in senseless, meaningless ways.

Sometimes these truths would cause too much collateral damage, especially to the ones we love. And as awful as those truths may be, harming those we love by burdening them with that knowledge would be worse.

But we have solace in God. He knows, He cares, and above all He understands.

He knows what it is that we can't tell, can't share with those we love. He knows, probably better than we ourselves do.

You can push the memories and the pain deep down inside yourself, lock it away and get on with your life. It's still there, down inside, dealt with as best as can be, and life goes on contentedly for the most part.

So we go on, knowing we have to take those secrets to our graves, but that eventually we will be free from them. That gives us solace in the 'here and now', that one day we'll be free of them.
