Hurricane Harvey Lessons Learned

Well we are emerging mostly unscathed. I will probably be out of work for about a week due to road conditions and shut down of the site.

But, no wind damage and still dry. Wife no longer mercilessly mocking the preps. She did not take things seriously until some of her friends started texting that their houses were getting flooded. After that the family stopped balking at putting together a go bag.

We live immediately west of Barker Reservoir. We did loose water for a few ours Sunday night and are now under a boil order.

What worked:
1. Plenty of stored water, batteries, flashlights, food etc.
2. Never lost electricity so was able to monitor adjacent creek and reservoir conditions and water levels. Monitored the news, although most of it was filled with rescue stories.
3. Listened in to the ARES net on Friday night on the Saltgrass repeater, but after that did not get much useful information. Just a lot of chatter.
4. Watched neighborhood areas to our East, North and South flood. Had a clear evacuation path to the West. The planned evac path from my house to family in Brazos and Robertson county stayed clear.
5. Local friends, texting and cellphones kept us informed of local conditions.
6. Made good use of a bicycle to reconnoiter local streets and flooding yesterday.

What I would improve:
1. Will probably buy a pair of waders, and thinking about a cheap Jon boat.
2. Will need to address maintaining access to communications if electricity and cable/internet go out.
3. Need to top up my gasoline cans earlier.

Still working on:
1. The evacuation decision. Chose not to evacuate due to the hurricane not hitting Houston initially. But the effects of this storm do concern me.
