Best small generator?

First of all, Honda and Yamaha are superior to anything else on the market, period. In my experience and that of others, Champion is a somewhat distant third.

For the 2k and smaller inverter generators, I think that Yamaha is slightly preferable to Honda for several reasons. Honda uses a plastic () camshaft, has no fuel gauge, and has no built-in petcock valve, so you cannot run the carburetor out of gas, an important step to ensure proper storage. That being said, Yamaha does not use a fuel pump, so adding an external fuel tank is difficult, and there aren't nearly as many places that can repair a Yamaha generator as there are that can repair a Honda.

I'd never criticize anyone for going with Honda though.
