I used to whine about raking leaves from trees I don't have but last year I didn't rake (silent protest I guess lol) and low and behold when I FINALLY decided I couldn't take the piled up leaves by the shed any longer I found the most GLORIOUS earthworms living under the pile of leaves. Not to mention a nice little layer of nicely composted oak leaves.
So ... I took the top off of it, the old man cut the bottom out of the storage container and I filled it up with leaves, some of the dirt that had a bunch of baby earthworms in it and my compost from the kitchen. Set it where I want to build some rabbit hutches, so the waste will just fall into the bin.
Hopefully I can stop buying mealworms for the poultry around here now. AND have some good dirt with lots of earthworms to put in my raised beds.
If I could figure out how to do pics I'd show ya, but I'm better with power tools than computers (yes, I know. The old man does too, that's why he uses the power tools and I watch. One too many trips to the Urgent Care place around the corner ...)
Got a new chicken coop up, too. This one is tall enough I can stand up straight in it while I'm cleaning it out, and has a metal roof. We're gonna Thompson water seal it, and put some insulation and asphalt shingles over the metal. And set it up on pavers so the wood edge is out of the dirt snd hay. I measured yesterday so we can buy some thin sheet wood to cut solid covers for the north side of the enclosed run in winter. I hope this is the last chicken coop we have to put together -- or build.
The old chicken coop I think I'm gonna use for the ducks a place to get. I'm still trying to figure out what I want to plant this spring. I'm as bad at gardening as I am with power tools but I wanna give it another try. The spinach I grew last year tasted so much better than the store bought stuff. And I think it is one of those crops that if I keep it reseeded and shaded in the hottest part of summer, I could grow all year long.
What did y'all do this weekend?
Got my "worm garden" together ...
