Leggy Spinach

I read about harvesting spinach, "start harvesting the outer leaves first and then gradually working your way in to the center of the plant as those leaves mature." Well, I don't think that will work for me, there is no "center." Looks more like a tree (pic).

I don't know what variety I have (though I bought it locally). I planted seed in late October (zone 9) in a place that gets 4 1/2 hours of sun. I wonder, is the spinach growing normally, just start picking the leaves, or should I have harvested using the cut-off method and gotten thicker plants (or should I still do that?) Or wrong season, variety, fertilizer, location?
