Shelf Life can of soda?

Soda is highly acidic. If aluminum cans where not coated with a polymer the soda would eat through the metal in a matter of weeks. There is a whole chapter of the book "Rust" concerning this if your interested in all the details (as much as is public knowledge, the industry very carefully guards the exact coating and how much of it is used. Despite this, aluminum does leach into the soda. Cat food cans for instance have a coating six times thicker than pop cans do because cats will not eat food contaminated with aluminum the way humans will.

I did once drink a bottle of seven up that was old enough to be bottled in glass with a aluminum cap and styrofoam sleeve. It had to be at least twenty years old as I can't remember anything bottled like that since the 80's. It tasted fine.

I don't imagine the soda itself could ever go bad, its too acidic, and I would think the cans themselves would last at many years before corroding out.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
