Why didn't 4wd get me unstuck from mud?

Does this vehicle have manual locking front hubs? Where they locked?

Generally, if the vehicle is already stuck, it can be a little hard to get the vehicle to engage the 4wd system without having some movement to let all everything shift into the proper position.

Also. Most factory 4wd vehicles have open differentials front and rear. This means that only one front tire and one rear tire will spin typically. That will also be the tire that has has the least amount of traction. There are also some vehicles that have a full time or AWD type transfer case that have another differential in the transfer case. These vehicles can be in '4wd' but only deliver power to ONE tire if it is on a slick surface or in the air.

The solution to most of these issues is a limted slip or locking differential(s). This allows powers to be distributed to any tire that has traction.
