Though it may be alluring to look for some skullduggery behind the COVID-19 "shelter in place," I am learning some of the reasons that explain the difference.
As you may know, viruses are fragments of RNA/DNA that invade your cells and trick them into replicating the virus - killing the host cell. And each virus may only attack a certain type of cell, and not all cells.
In this instance, the Corona virus attacks a cell that produces surfactant for the lung cells, vital to their function. The end result is that the lungs aren't absorbing enough oxygen, while still expelling CO2. CO2 buildup is what triggers shortness of breath. So infected people can appear to be healthy despite "silent hypoxia". (A similar thing occurs with "walking pneumonia") This condition may worsen until the victim is so deprived of oxygen he can no longer function, “tires out,” and death follows shortly thereafter.
Silent hypoxia explains the additional symptoms of confusion or inability to arouse, loss of taste and smell, and bluish lips or face.
Until there are fast and inexpensive tests, knowing who is infected and who is not is a problem. The long incubation period is another challenge. And silent hypoxia may mask the onset of acute respiratory distress syndrome, and lung failure.
What you can do to help yourself - monitor your temperature, pulse, and oxygen level. (A pulse oximeter is widely available).
Even if you're asymptomatic, don't presume that you're not infected. You may still be a risk to others, if you spread the virus by not keeping quarantined.
It has fooled medical staff, who sickened and died, unaware of their silent hypoxia.
