the life and after life of pinto beans

I am just reporting on an experiment with pinto beans. Ten years ago I put a 5 lb sack of pintos in the back of the fridge to see what could be done with old beans. I heard that when they aged they got unusable, wouldn't soften up when cooked.
I used the lock down as an excuse to test. what a fail. They cooked fine in refried, bakedbeans, and soup. When is the turning point for degradation. Or, is it that I stored them in the cold?

The only difference I noticed was extra volatility after eating.
