Diesel glowplug curiosity question

I just read in a different thread about 12v glowplugs, and how they work better, and so on. I've never owned any diesel vehicle, but I know that compression is used to ignite the fuel, and that glowplugs are used to get the process going.

My question: Why does it need more than one glowplug? I understand that one in every cylinder works better, but if it got a good kick from one cylinder, wouldn't that make it start?

Why is this relevant? Well, in an emergency situation, you might somehow only have one ...
