I am trying to design a small get home bag but was just interested to get some ideas from the various experts on here. Maybe you all think of something I wouldn't.
Firstly I want to point out a few of my jobs fairly unique issues that will determine the rules of my personal get home bag.
Rules:
1. Must be able to get through TSA screening if required. (I can take some stuff that a regular passenger can't but for this assume it's normal passenger rules as when in Canada I am almost as limited as the next guy.)
2. Must be able to be on board on the flight deck but also be put in the hold when I'm dead heading. (not hard to avoid if willing to take stuff out of the bag before putting it in hold but this would be a real pain during normal operations) precluded then is basically anything that can be in one area but not the other. Lithium ion batteries being the best example but there is an extensive list that any regular traveller will know.
3. Must be small and easy to carry. Small regular (school backpack size) at a maximum. This may sound small but as I will mention shortly it hopefully isn't.
The job of my get home bag is to carry added items that will be useful in an emergency to help get me home to my family on the road during adverse weather or other emergencies that make travel difficult.
The reasoning:
(Winter 2013/2014 I got stuck away for an entire 4 days off, all flights home cancelled, no train service and like an idiot no credit card for hire car. Four days might not sound bad but on top of a total of 16+1 days of trips on each side of that made for a total of 21 days away from home while my wife was looking after our son who was quite sick at the time during the worst snowstorms the north east had seen in a long time. (luckily my home prep was "better" than my trip prep but only just. They were glad to see me and a restock on my arrival home.)) Not the longest that a job keeps people away but for a family so engrained with the routine of 6 days on and 4 or 5 days at home it is a lifetime.
Before I open this up to all your friendly advice I'll add to the point about only wanting a small bag and hoping that should be a enough.
I already carry a large pilot suitcase, cooler and backpack (the backpack is what I'll add to because as of now it only carries a headset) with clothes for all climates, food for 6 days and all the other stuff one might expect to find in a suitcase. The other useful item I already carry is a flashlight in the backpack.
There is quite the possibility you might come back and say what more could you want for the simple task of driving a rental car back home from a location you are stuck. And to that I would say you might be right, I have successfully carried out this plan 3 times since (all due to heavy snow storms) with no issues. I am just looking for some expert advice and real world experience of what could go wrong and what would be useful to carry.
Thanks in advance for the advice
