2nd gun recommendations

I got a 9mm pistol (and a 22lr rimfire one) and I am looking for a next gun.

It should serve the purpose of home/personal defense for today and future possible situations. Our unassuming house is in dense suburbia.

Since I will not be buying a 2nd (3rd) gun too often I am looking for some nice one but nothing too exotic.
