One of my big concerns was should I be more worried about viruses or chemicals. The answer was chemicals if you live in a 1st world nation.

So I hadn't really had a lot of time but I finally got around to it and just want to come back and say I think I found the best filter. That is the Katadyn Combi Microfilter. It filters out bacteria, viruses, and even chemicals and it can filter out 13,000-gallons of water. So at about 200 dollars that's about less than 1 cents a gallon. However the carbon core is only rated at 100 gallons for reducing chemicals before you have to change it out. But still I think it's the best portable system out on the market.

The MSR Guardian is only rated at filtering 10,000 liters which is about 2600 gallons at 300 dollars and doesn't even touch chemicals. Idk how much chemical elements the Combi removes but some is obviously better than none. Only benefit of the Guardian is it seems more durable/less prone to breaking upon dropping and you dont have to worry about cleaning it as it cleans itself. So you just filter water, and put it back in your bag. Where as the Combie it's recommended to clean it, and then let it dry which could be an inconvenience if you're on the move a lot. But cleaning doesn't look that hard.

Surprisingly the Combi is not promoted nearly as much as the hiker pro series and MSR guardian.
