Side plates

I figure some of you guys have body armor, do any of you use steel side plates on your plate carrier?

Really curious to know it it's used for some situations, if it's left on permanently. Also, does it pinch? Seems like if you move wrong it would make one hell of a blood blister...

I know the idea situation is to face the threat, that way the front of the carrier faces in the direction it's most needed, but do most think it's necessary?
