US/Russian Friendship During Civil War

There is a mostly unknown history of friendship and cooperation between the US and Russia during the US Civil War, aka the Northern War of Aggression.

In this video can be heard a description of how Tsar Alexander II sent his navy to both New York and San Francisco ports. He said if France or Britain actively intervened to support the Confederate States he would consider this a declaration of war.

Mrs Lincoln toasted Russia, saying that Russia was "the only European power that has maintained a hearty sympathy with the United States during our present troubles."

I don't want to get into the matter of whether the Confederate States where right to secede, or whether Lincoln was right to war to preserve the Union. I'm posting this because this is history I hadn't heard before, and being a history buff I found it fascinating.

I've put this into the General Discussion forum because it's not current politics [other than Trump and Putin talking on the phone].
