restore a marine knife using wood handle instead of leather

#2 son and buddy found a USMC Fighiting knife - the one with a plain blade , tip that sweeps up and a groove ground into one side.

They were metal detecting in a place where USMC Reserve used to go out and play Army on the weekends in the late 50's and early 60's. Anyway they found a Kabar / Fighting knife in a creek bed. Looks like it's been there quite a while. Leather handle has rotted off and the fisnish has been creek sanded for I bet 50 years or so.

He's thinking of restoring it. The end with the 'nut' that screwed the washers on is buggered up so I'm thinking the leatehr handle isn't going to work. My dad is a good wood worker I'm thinking they could make a wood one maybe drill some holes in the metal part that ran through the leather washers then used rivets and epoxy to hold it together?

Let's block ads! (Why?)
