I bought my children & grandchildren a sturdy COMPASS about the time they started to tell time & were beginning to read. Then taught them how to use it, eventually teaching them map reading, orientation & land navigation..

A printed star chart is also a good thing, then on clear dark star lit nights, take them outside to learn the stars, constellations & which way is North, South, East & West.

A book on knots, some rope & teach them how to tie them.

Child size rod, reel & fishing gear, then take them fishing.

A little hand trowel, a few easy to grow vegetable seeds & you have a beginner gardener.

Once old enough to understand how dangerous FIRE can be, a FERRO ROD & STRIKER & teach the bushcraft fire building.

I also bought a child size bolt action single shot (no clip) 22 when they were old enough to understand what "killing" was & could firmly shoulder it. Then took them to the rifle range with me & taught them gun safety, how to sight & target shoot.
