What media do you use for tuning in to whats going on?

So what media is the best source for keeping an eye on whats going on so that you will know when the shtf or a situation is in development? cnn? local news? facebook? local papers? I suppose a combination. How are people in hurricane areas communicating and getting news? Is there a one best source to be first to know if we got bombed, the dam burst, or a riot is breaking out in your city?

I just remembered, my mom uses a police scanner alot to know whats going on, or at least she did. Seems like they may have started using new system that the public cant hear though.
