2018 garden plans

Using my last few days of Christmas leave to plan out this years garden. I’m pumped because this is the first year since we have started growing produce that I will be here the entire growing season. Heirloom seeds are in the mail. I’m in zone 7a.

We use raised beds for everything but corn and potato’s. We also use containers for herbs and some smaller vegetables depending on how much room we have. I’m expanding the amount of raised beds we have, and instead of using wood I’m going to line the beds with cinderblocks so I can plant smaller stuff like carrots and onions etc in the holes of the cinderblocks. I am planning on my 2 existing 4’x4’ raised beds plus 4 new 4’x8’ raised beds.

We have been growing our compost pile and have a huge amount of chicken manure/straw that has aged and I want to use as a mulch/fertilizer combo.

We have always direct sown our seeds in late March early April but this year we are thinking of buying a cheap 30$ Small shelf greenhouse to start our seedlings in the garage with a light (I think). From my research I’ve gathered that you start about 4 weeks prior to the last frost, they need about 16 hours of light, mist them with a spray bottle, and gradually introduce them outside to increase hardiness before we sow into the garden. It’ll be a learning experience for sure.

We will also be increasing our flock (4 barred rocks and 3 Rhode Island reds) of layers to 14, either buff Orpington or Wyandotte or jersey giants. I want a dual purpose heritage bird that i can eventually breed for meat and stop raising out Cornish Xs. My wife has also blessed of on a breeding trio of rabbits that I’m super excited about. She will be absent for the dispatching though.

I’ve read a lot about green houses on here and googled it as well but I’m hoping to get some advice, feed back, lessons learned, or anything y’all think I’m missing or doing wrong. Any resources or threads you know of that could help me learn I would appreciate. Thank you.
