Frozen pipe solution...

I would say never okay to smack a pipe with a hammer.

Our outside tap is frozen. I tried the heat gun trick a bit but it didn't work. So we have a bunch of hose in the basement and we hooked it up on a tap in the basement and dragged it out and watered the horses.

But I'm not thinking about hammering on the frozen pipes. I lived in an old house back when and we had frozen pipes all the time. Leaky old house. Cold as crap in the winter, even with two coal stoves going. More than a few times, we'd sleep on the floor in the living room near the stove there.

I never hammered one pipe though. We lived through it. It sucked sometimes. My wife is currently complaining about the temp these last 12 days or so. I tell her, we had the same years back and it'll get better. The winters aren't any harder than they were once in awhile ten years ago, maybe 20 years or so, and even 50 years back. There are bad and very cold winters. Pipes freeze.
